German Shepherds are very easy to train, in my opinion the easiest but they require a lot of attention and they are high maintenance, need lots of exercise but they are loyal, noble and extremely smart.

I'll agree with everything just said here. But, let me make a small point. They are easy to train because they are so smart. So smart in fact, they will require a lot of attention. If you treat them with the same mentality as another human you'll be fine. They can't be treated like the average house dog. They require conversation, lots of exercise, lots of playing and they should get lots of training to keep them busy and keep them on track. Did I mention they are really smart?

Some things you'll need to do backwards too. Meaning, make sure you don't teach them things you don't want them to know. Don't let them see you doing things you don't want them to know either. They are smart and they will learn things from one example. One of our dogs understands English and German (he can also spell).

Our dogs are moody and get their feelings hurt easily. If you leave them in the house when you go into the backyard they will lock the door behind you. We carry keys as it happens on a regular basis. I showed our dog how to open a door once too. Man was that a bad idea! If I go to bed without playing with our male first he'll charge the bedroom and lay in my spot on the bed. Trying to get him off turns into a fight every time. It's amazing how quickly he can temporarily forget his commands.

Oh ya, don't let them watch too much TV either. There are several shows, movies and commercials we can't have on. Things like the Pillsbury Dough Boy and small talking animals (like the 3 Chipmunks) can instantly turn our dogs into the monsters from the Resident Evil movies. ;)

Jon.

Jon.

I know I've had 7 German Shepherds in my life one as a child one as an early teen, three all at once then now two they are family members I do not put them in harms way I'll protect them first as they would do the same on their own.

My male now has learned how to open the heavy security storm door from the outside since he was 6 months, which means he has to step on the handle then pull on the door, I did not teach him this and it freaked me out the first time he did it.
My female also taught herself to open it from the inside so when they are outside he opens the door and holds it for the lady then some times if he is not quick enough he has to do it again to let himself in, so funny.

They know by what close I wear what to do if I put on my work close they settle down in their favorite spots and lay down for the day, and when I put on my jeans and outdoors close they get excited and know I'm going outside or am taking them for a ride. I love my Shepherds.

Yepp Jon and Fritz, I too owned shepherds all my life, once you have one thats all you want.
Jon shame on you, you mean you dont have a towel tied around the frig door, and taught your dog to open it, and get you a cold one.. lol

I posted this link earlier in the thread, dont know if you caught it.

I must have missed that video. Pretty cool!

I'll pass on the towel tied to the handle of the fridge. With two GSD's on the loose 24 hours a day there's bound to be trouble!

Jon.

Yup!! She's watching her owner run away. It's one of the ways to get a terrific stacking shot. She's about a month pregnant, too!! There will be puppy breath soon... ahhhhh

i like it a lot. it one of the more under-appreciated mods ive done to my truck

when i put a dresser or my photo equipment back there i dont have to worry about scratches or anything like that. I also imagine the dogs like laying it on it more than a plastic liner or line-x. Its also quieter.. no more hearing stuff slide back and forth back there

in this photo you can kind of see the strap i have that holds the dogs in the truck. It goes from side to side with a metal clip in the middle to hook the dogs up too.

the bed cover i have makes for a nice compliment to the bedrug also

I've had a BedRug in my truck for about 6 years now. It's one of the best investments I've ever made. I can't tell you how many times I've slept on it. It's very comfortable...
