Hi all,
Can anyone recommend a Digital flatbed scanner,
I am looking for a scanner for copying prints that where taken before I left the film world and for general use after.
Should I look for the # of pixel's (higher the better !!)

I have the Canon 9950 and absolutely live it. It will scan anything and does it with great precision.

Take a look at www.publishingperfection.com (external link) They have most of the better scanners listed on their site. Right now, for what you want to do, most any scanner on the market will do. The better scanners will do it faster.

I used a Visioneer OneTouch 8820 to scan and save several heirloom family albums. It worked great. The only issue I have with it now is I cannot figure out how to separate the top from the bottom so I can clean the scanning surface. So..., I'd recommend that you at least look for a unit that can be opened up for cleaning.

Beyond that, most scanners today have a decent enough software package that you can do the job with most anything on the market.

As far as High resolution goes, if you jack up the resolution on the scanner, the scans take forever, the files are incredibly large and your project will become a nightmare.

I wouldn't scan above 300 DPI. If you need more, upsize in photoshop. IMO it will do a better job and allow for batch processing of an upsizing action.

I have a Scanport SQ2400 that interfaced via a SCSI card. It's all back in the box now. Scans way too slow to compete with todays scanners.

As Doc Klepper said regarding his scanner, "It will scan anything and does it with great precision."

Most people don't try to scan items other than photos, negatives and paper documents. If you are married to a quilter, you can scan the fabrics she wants to quilt next and let her "create" her next quilt on the computer. Works great to see which fabrics work best together for a given pattern.
