Hi All

We are visiting relatives over Xmas and they have said that their DVD player (a Sony DVPNS-355) now only 'plays' the audio the video does not show but they get the default player image on the TV screen.

They have checked the plugs etc and all seems OK. Being the one they tend to ask about such matters ;) I have yet to hear of such a thing ~ if the audio is playing and the players own 'intro page' is showing surely the "whole" signal is getting through.

Any pointers or thoughts as what may be wrong ~ at this stage I wonder if any of the grandchildren have fiddled with settings but without knowing what to examine any feedback would be very welcome.

I know its short notice to ask for help but if you can ..........thanks

TIA :)

That was a great meal ~ you must have a good set of pans :p

Certainly doesn't sound like a cable issue as you're getting the default screen. You could try running a cleaning disk thru it. I doubt if it is a setting issue. Sounds more like some type of issue with reading, or processing, the video data. And, I'm sure you've tried it with multiple disks?

Many thanks for the feedback. At this stage I think they have tried more than one DVD so it would seem to suggest there is something more fundamental wrong with it.

I surmise DVD players of that generation are single beam and as such are reading the audio and video 'data' simultaneously and/or sequentially. Therefore as it is playing the audio it suggests there is a failure of the video processing but having said that that does not readily explain why they see the default intro screen.

Oh well if I can not suss it out it will just have to go in for a service job :(

I may be making this more complicated than it is...but as you haven't found the solution as yet.....

Check that they don't have the DVD player connected via a Home Theatre AMP. It is possible that they are getting the AMP's default Video Screen and not the DVD Player's default Video Screen. In which case, that could explain why the Audio is still working.

If this is the case, then there are plenty of settings that may have inadvertently been changed which need checking.

If they don't have an HT AMP....then who knows ?
