You pick a lens for me :D Under $200 though and I will be super happy and will appreciate you forever! :) :) :)

Go for the Sigma 17-70, it does everything VERY well, even has a great macro ability.

Forget the kit lens, even when stopped down its not a stunning lens, I did some tests at the sweet spot f8, the difference between the kit lens & the Sigma 17-70 was amazing!! SO much more sharpness.

You wont regret getting that lens, but you will with the kit lens, its a cheaply made thing too, if you want the best for a cheap price, the 17-70 is hard to beat.

Nick :-)

kit lens is fine if you use it within its sweet spot. There are some really nice pix taken by the kit lens that will pale an L lens!

I had 2 different kit lenses & both were rubbish, ok they werent THAT bad, but I certainly wouldnt have taken anything decent with them, the sharpness even at the sweet spot just wasnt any good.

Take a look at the charts for each lens on SLRGear (external link), while it might not appear that much on a graph, I found the differences to be VERY noticeable, the graphs are pretty accurate of what I have found on my own tests too.

Its ok for a starter lens while you figure out the camera, but thats all, I certainly wouldnt pay anything for one, its better spent on another lens, ANY other lens is better, the kit lens is ok overall, if you dont intend on a closer inspection of your pics or plan on resizing them for web use, but for high quality images, its not a good choice, but its cheap, so you only get what you pay for.

Nick :-)

No new camera will ever make the XT not take fantastic images. You can never go wrong buying one.

Yes but a tripod and f8-16 is very limiting.

Get a 2nd hand 20D. Much better build and handling for the same money.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but there's really nothing that can be bought new that gives good IQ below $200... save the 50mm 1.8. But that's a prime.

You're probably right, and by probably I mean 100%. I don't feel like getting the kit lens..or the kit itself unless it comes with some REALLY great accessories.

Btw does the rebel xt come with a rechargable battery + charger (In most places where it's sold)

The kit lens is very good for the price. In my opinion, it is far better than putting off your ability to take pictures waiting to be able to afford another lens. I mean, if you are into taking pics enough to spend on a DSLR, then you won't want to wait.

I would recommend spending the extra money on one or two 1 Gig + cards before reaching for more expensive lenses. You'll be just getting started when your current card will be full, assuming it is compatible (CF).

The memory cards are no big deal to me at all. I can get 1 gig cards for less than $10.

I probably will buy the body, but I'll make sure I have a decision on the lens before I buy

I've seen some beautiful shots from the XT. I would say buy used, try to get it with the body only, then buy the 50mm 1.8 adn the kit lens off eBay where there are a ton of them. Then work on more glass. My two cents.

I just bought a used Rebel XT to be my second body to my XTi. Everything I've seen about the XT has been mostly positive. (Some don't like it's compact size.) I should get mine in a couple of days.

Since I've been researching them, you can find refurbished XT bodies at Adorama for $399.95. (They only had the silver bodies the last few days.)B&H had a used silver XT with the kit lens for $489.)

On eBay, the XT prices seem to be all over the board. The best I've seen is around $375 for a refurbished body.

I'm wanting to buy a canon rebel xt or xti as well, but not sure what it means when I see 30d, 40d, or 20d around it. Not sure what it means. Can someone fill me in? I'm new in the canon world.

Thanks!

With the sigma 17-70, about how far do you think I'd have to be to get a good bird shot? Do you think it would work well if the bird was up in a tree?

you would need to be very close even at 70 to get closeups, I am just beginning as well so I dont have an exact amount but I am guessing you would want to be around 10 ft or so for a decent closeup

here is a pic that I took earlier this morning, this first one is at 300mm and I was about 18ft away and at the same height

the squirell was right above this suet box, then I took some pics to give you an idea of what you would achieve from about 25ft using different zooms, all of these were taken with a rebel xt using the canon 70-300 IS USM lens

first at 70mm

then at 200mm
