My brother just got a Canon S2 IS camera this morning for Christmas, and the zoom does NOT work. The lens is completely irresponsive to the zoom buttons but the lens extends and retracts when the camera is turned on and off. Also, the menu will NOT appear when the MENU button is pressed. Is there something we're doing wrong or should I have my father return the camera?

Sure sounds broken to me. Take it back to the store and try another one right there.

Bummer, my dad bought it online and my brother has to go back to college. I hope they'll replace it fast.

Man that sux.
Just a couple of things. You say zoom buttons, technically it's not buttons but a ring around the shutter release. So when you say buttons I am hoping you may be pushing the wrong thing. To zoom the S2 push the nub on the forward side of the chrome ring around the shutter release left or right.
Second, the menu: the displays on the S2 work in kind of a different manner. Something should be showing in either the viewfinder or on the LCD display. The DISP button cycles between these options: Viewfinder off, LCD on-no info. Viewfinder off, LCD on-full info. LCD off, VF on-no info. LCD off VF on-full info. If you close the swivel LCD the VF turns on, if you open the LCD the VF turns off, unless you have the DISP button selected to LCD off, then the VF stays on all of the time.
I hope this helps, it would sure be nice if you could snap some christmas photos.
