Use the auto setting as you learn your new camera. See what the camera thinks are good settings for your pictures, and go from there. Read the manual when you are getting ready for bed. Above all else, enjoy. Ian

Thanks Welcome to the forum. Best place to start bar none is the manual. Start with the green box and explore from there page by page. Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Where tail lights and headlights look like that? There are several ways to do that, and all involve a long exposure time. The easiest way is to set it to manual mode and play with the aperture and shutter speed until you get the desired effect. But you can also set it to either Av or Tv. In Av, close the aperture so that the exposure time goes up. In Tv, set the shutter speed for several seconds so that the aperture closes. Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Read your manual thoroughly. It will help you immensely as you learn to use your new camera. And, above all, practice!

SuzyView Cream of the Crop More info | Dec 26, 2006 06:58 | #8 Take the advice above and read the manual. If you want to learn about photography, then you need a good book. I recommend "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson. He also helps you set your controls on your camera if you have the manual to use as your guide to the buttons. If you really have trouble and you need someone to teach you, take a class. I know some places offer some for anyone buying a camera from their store. Although I don't particular love Ritz, they do offer some guidance to their customers. Best way to learn, really, you are asking in a photography forum, is to go out there and shoot stuff, a lot. Start with the auto mode and then P. Av and Tv may help you a little later. Get used to the zooming in and out and the lighting first. That's where I would start. Good luck and welcome.
