Hi,
My 400mm has quite a few large specks of dust inside the lens. I'm presuming they've got in from the camera end and are lying on the outside of the inner glass, if so is this normal and what should I use to get them out? I've not had it too long and am surprised at how dusty it has got. I actually keep a much smaller lens on the body so have been swapping lenses quite a bit which doesn't help but even so.....
Thanks in advance.

Try a rocket blower, cost about 7 pounds, i give my kit a blast with it when changing lenses every few days.

or get a microfibler lens cleaning cloth and be dead sure its clean then wipe the dust away

OR get a lens pen

The dust is on the inside of the lens according to Dave!

Oh O_O i thought he was reffering to inside the lens, on the rear element... if its actually INSIDE the lens, tell canon, they can fix it, costs about a hundred pounds to fix though i think... worth it on that lens though

Hi - I think Phylets right it does appear to be on the exterior of the inner element at the camera end. It's just deep down so it's hard to tell. I'll get one of those blowers and give it a good cleaning and then see what it looks like. I'm having a right problem with dust it's getting in everywhere. I had to lock up the mirror the other day as two large specks had got above the mirror and were appearing through the viewfinder. I know this wouldn't affect image quality or the sensor but it was annoying. Thanks for the help.

On a side note, dave, how do you like the lens? Mine should be here tomorrow!

Welll it's been mostly terrible light since I bought it but I have had some very nice results but not yet the stunning images I'd hoped for although this is probably down to my inexperience. I'm totally happy that I bought the right lens for the money and I've not once found that the zoom might have been a better choice so no worries there. I think basically put if you've got around a grand to spend and want the reach of a telephoto then it's got to be the 400mm prime and I'm sure you'll be over the moon with it.

I have the 400mm too, complete with a couple of bits dust inside.

It never shows on the pictures so I have never wanted to send it back to Canon. I have read that most of the time they come back with even more!
