Well, you folks sure don't make it easy do you!
the theme "Power" was covered well by all!
I called my wife in to give her opinion, and of course it varied from mine.
Anyhow, first my informal critique:

shanen2179 with "battery"- Just didn't do much for me. The exposure is off, and I would have liked to have seen the entire battery. I know what the S series is capable of and look forward to your photos and entries in the future!

gewb with "power of the pen, power of the people"- Wow. You blew me away with this one. Totally unexpected and I've looked at it at least 20 times. I'm not sure if it's noise or texture I'm seeing, but it adds to the composition. Excellent photo.

MingFromMongo with "Dresden Nuclear Power Station"- I wanted this photo to work. I figured you probably had another shot you might have used of the same power plant.
I would have liked to have seen the tops of the red and white stacks as well as the towers. I think you may have zoomed in too tight, and used a higher iso, which created excess noise in your photograph. Thanks!

spur with "Wind Power"- ahhh, the infamous windmill. As always spur, a good photograph.
Subtle in the Power catagory, but never the less, powerful image of a not so long ago era.

Cindi, with "Horse Power"- As my dad would say, "Now that's Parr" (parr pronounced power). I like this photograph Cindi. To me, it might be a bit over saturated, and I'd liked to have seen the motor offset from center somewhat. Thank you for that entry.

teekay, with "400 Horses"- Big bad Yamahammers! My favorite outboard for sure. If I had to find something "wrong" I'd say maybe a bit tight if you cropped it out. I like the reflections in the stainless props. Good shot as always teekay.

Paul B. with "Take Off!"- I really like this one. It looks like you were 20 feet away from the plane. The blur of the prop and the black motor really sends home the "power" theme to me. Excellent capture.

mishnogram with "elephants"- What a nice photograph. If it weren't for the fence, and those fake trees, it could have been a "wild" shot. I'm never fortunate enough to capture a zoo shot so well.

And as always, the hard part for me:

#1 Gewb
#2 mishnogram
#3 Paul B.

Honorable mentions to Cindi, spur and teekay.

The top 3 photographs are equal in quality to me. I used the theme "Power" to make my final decision.
On to you Gewb, and thanks so much everyone for your entries. Happy New Year!!

Good choice of winners, O_T, and congratulations to them!

I particularly liked your elephants, Mishnogram. Not sure what it is about the shot that does it - the subtle colour, the sheer size of the beasts, or the composition - but it spells POWER bigtime.

Hello O_T -

Thanks for a great topic and for your kind words regarding my entry! I'm honored you selected "Power of the Pen, Power of the People" as there were many wonderful entries this week.

I'm curious, you said:

What were her selections? I don't mean to put you or her on the spot but I, too, ask my wife for her opinion on entries every week...we agree maybe half of the time (and we've been married over 30 years).

This entry was both noise and texture. This was a "trial" hand held pic taken in low light, fast ISO and slow shutter. I then set up a "proper" shoot (more light, tripod, lower ISO, etc.) but even with the same angles the image just didn't feel right - so I went with the trial pic and added a slight bit of noise.

Thanks again. Now, what to do for next week...

Have a happy New Year!

Regards,
gewb

teekay, I agree. Those elephants are incredible. I, like you couldn't decide what made that photo what it is, but it sure worked.

Gewb, She chose the elephants for 1st, yours for 2nd, and Cindi's motor for 3rd. She said, you really wouldn't see the power in Gewb's entry if you weren't American. I said, hon, I live in Canada now, that document is even more powerful. lol......we tend to agree to disagree sometimes. It works.
The power aspect for me was the fact that for better or worse, that document has affected a lot of the world.

O_T thanks for the second place pick and congrats gewb on the great photograph. I was lucky enough to hit the Toronto Zoo on an odd cool halloween day and all the animals were really up and about.

Looking forward to the next challenge.
