I was wondering how to obtain pictures like these:

I'm looking for this type of feel in my images...deep colors, highly contrasted that have a sort of "epic" look to them. how do i achieve this?

Well, what have you tried? And how does that fall short? What edting program do you use? Please post some before and after attempts.
