The only virus I ever got was a Microsoft Word or Excel macro virus, back in the mid 90's -- and that was at work where we were a Mac peripheral company. Those viruses were easily passed along in shared documents. I have never gotten a virus on an OS X machine, even off the web or in worm-laden e-mails. I don't use virus protection, but I have the built-in OS X firewall on. No worries -- yet.

I guess if you are really cautious, you can avoid most of them DDA - C&C welcomed and encouraged
