A few shots from the "friendly" on Boxing Day at the rugby club, a chance for everyone to get together in the name of....well.....a party! Oh and some rugby!

C&C welcome as ever, EXIF info will still be intact, however all photos were with the 1d, 300 2.8, Manual mode 1/400 or 1/320 @ f2.8, ISO 1000. Only exception to this was the last one which was on the 2nd body (1D) with a 70-200 (same manual settings as above). Very limited PP on these - just cropped, resized and sharpened - other than that its what came out of the camera.

Thanks for looking!

1. Amazing how seeing the try line increases the determination!!

Good stuff! I'd probably expose them a tiny bit more but you sure have nice rich colors and you've captured good action. Gosh I miss watching this sport -- Boxing Day too! Not much rugby's played in the colonies and none anywhere near where I live that I know of. There's something special about watching a friendly on Boxing Day -- brings back fond memories of years gone by.

Jerry ~ Baseball is a game where only defensive players handle the ball and offensive players who hit successfully in only one third of their at bats are among the best in the sport.

Great series, I've started to love the rugby shots on this forum.. probably alot more than the football shots even though I prefer football, just seems to be more dramatic and action packed.

I agree, looking again a couple are perhaps a little darker, I didn't do any auto levels on these and would think that would have lifted them slightly.

The Boxing Day game is something of an institution at our rugby club, usually its a President's XV vs the Director of Rugby's XV. Standard of rugby is usually restricted in direct proportion to the amount of food eaten on Christmas Day. Then of course, after the game, the clubhouse gets taken over taking us into a very very late night.

Adam - thank you.

I enjoy shooting both to be honest, although do find rugby the more challenging of the two.

You should get yourself up to the University ground at Cochrane Park, or to the likes of Blaydon, Percy Park or Northern Rugby Clubs to have a crack at it. Alternatively, pop down to Tynedale and the scenery around there makes it one of the most photogenic rugby clubs I have come across.

Like the Quayside pics on your gallery - then again, I am biased, was born in Newcastle...and at Uni there too.

Some how I missed this thread paul. Appolgies

#1 looks over sharpned. Was this done as part of a batch?

#3 Personally I don't like the crop but then I'm not designing a page layout around it.

#4 Nice action

Darren - apologies accepted, although obviously very disappointed ;)

I agree about the sharpening - just gone back into the original and re-pp'd (is that really a word!?) it and something was up with my original edit. My only excuse was these were done in the bar after the game with a pint of Guinness in my hand!! :)

Anyway, I hope this looks a little more natural:

Great shots. Too bad there's no Rugby around me. I've only seen it on TV.

Please tell me in that last shot that's dirt flying? Because if it isn't, you've got one dirty sensor.

I'd lvoe to shoot the rugby at Cochrane Park, BUSA were looking for student photographers to work (voluntarily) as photographers for them. Problem is that as my computer broke I ended up buying a Powerbook for christmas and not a Sigma 70-200 f/2.8, so I don't really have the right lenses for sports.

What great detail. I like the mud flying around and the facial expressions. I noticed the one guy didn't have a mouth piece in. He is a brave guy. Not sure he'll have his teeth very long the way the pictures demonstrate the danger. Nice job

It's a tough job but someones got to do it!! Do you get paid for your programme covers?

Cargo123,
Good spot on the missing gum shield. I'm suprised play continued. When I played Rugby I was always told by ref's to put my gum shield back in again. I didn't think about it at the time but it's not only a danger to your teeth and tounge, but also to other players.

I struggled through - quite tricky balancing 2 cameras and a pint of Guinness whilst shooting too!

Programme covers were unpaid....I used to play for this lot up to the start of this season so this was done "as a favour". Although I did net myself a free ticket to the New Year Party so it turned out rather well!!

Gum shields still aren't a prerequisite for Rugby, hence a couple of players here without them. It is dangerous not to wear one, had a couple of horrible incidents where had I not been wearing one my teeth would probably be sitting in a jar beside my bed!!
