The rarest of the woodpeckers in the UK (I think), I was all the way down in lovely Somerset when I took this. He seemed to be getting a lot of food (larvae etc.) out of this tree.
Thanks for looking.

Excellent shot!

This is actually the commonest UK woodpecker (lesser spotted is by far the rarest) but who cares when they're this photogenic?

Not so; the Wryneck (Jynx torquilla) is the rarest woodpecker in the U.K.

Just come back to take another look at this shot Seany. This is a very much photographed bird in the U.K. but I have to say that your photo is one of the best I have seen. The background bokeh is A1 and the tree is just sufficiently out of focus to concentrate the eye on this beautiful bird; and what a capture - most woodpeckers are shot "side-on" but this is a great pose with a bill full of Christmas Dinner and a rather "cheeky" look on his face.

What a great capture of the woody, Seany. The meal in its mouth is definitely a beautiful bonus. Great work!

Ho-hum...

Quote from Collins about the wryneck:

In Britain now extinct...

So - to satisfy your pedantry - the lesser spotted is by far the rarest endemic woodpecker.

Which is what everyone else knew I meant all along.

In fact, there was a yellow-bellied sapsucker on Tresco in 1975 - a bit rarer than wryneck, then.
