hello POTN,

after recently aquiring a dslr, i am looking for a tripod with more "functionality"

i currently have a solidex video tripod (company has gone out of business), and the construction of the tripod is VERY sturdy. however, there is one downfall to the whole system.
it turns out to be that this tripod is for video only, since it has no vertical tilt option.

instead of buying a whole new tripod, i was thinking of maybe just replacing the head of this one, with one that has more functionality. which would save me quite a bit of money.

my question is, are all tripod threads universal? the base of my camera screws into the tripod w/o its head perfectly so im pretty sure i can just buy another head. or am i mistaken?

thanks

You'll probably need to get a (under $5) thread adapter bushing (external link); most tripods connect to their heads with a 3/8-16 thread screw while smaller cameras (like yours) use 1/4-20 thread ones. Wherever you get your head should also be able to supply you with the screw adapter.

One way is to take it in to a camera shop which has agood tripod range and see if any of the heads fit or are suitable.
