I haven't posted sports in a while, but I have seen several post questioning if the Siggy is up to the task of doing sports (or pro) photography so I decided to put these up here. I haven't used my Sigma in sometime, but when I decided to go to the Glaxo High School Invitational at Reynolds Arena I decided to break the old lens out and give it a whirl. These were shot with a 1D, ISO I think was either 640 or 800. Shutter floated between 1/400 and 1/500. All shot wide open. I'll only post 4 here, but I overall I am still pretty happy with the lens.

ISO 640 or 800? hot dang. But then it is the 1DMKI.
I guess you answered my question. Whoops.

Nice shots Mark. As always you are consistent with good photos.
I do love the 70-200 FL on the 1.3 crop for basketball.

Mark - These are solid proof that the Sigma 70-200 can do the job but we all know that you did your part too. I always enjoy seeing your stuff -- especially basketball and volleyball because yours is a standard we all need to emulate.

Very nice... I really like the color.

ISO 800 1/500 .WOW. That is one good lighted gym.

great stuff there, gives me more confidence with indoor lighting.

was this with skylighting (windows in the roof?) or at night?

nice and sharp even at 200mm here.

I love my Sigma 70-200

Many college division one colleges have fairly good lighting. Usually you can do ISO 800-1250.

In Pauley Pavillion I can do 1/800 at ISO 1250. So if I want to go slower, I can pull it down.

Your photos look excellent. Did u use Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 APO EX DG HSM?
If you say yes then I am impressed with it because I am not sure with 3rd party lens like Sigma and Tamaron.

I have to make up my mind for choice between Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM Lens and Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 APO EX DG HSM.

Go the Sigma 70-200mm I've been using it for some time and its very sharp and has lots of bang for the bucks. Mine was a second hand lens and in perfect condition.

Tamrom also make some good lenses.

If you get the 24-70mm, what are you going to use to shoot above 70mm?

Idealy, you want both focal lengths. The 24-70 is a very valuable length for basketball too.

A pro will use a 300 2.8 or 70-200 2.8 and 24-70.

Must have pretty decent lights to get your ISO down that low in a gym....I can barely get my siggy 70-200 2.8 to work without ISO of 1600 in our gyms...thats why I use the 85 so much...

Absolutely Super..... I had my 85 with me, and probably would have benifited by using it. I will not take the 1D mk 1 over ISO 800. I am just to lazy to do all that clean up on the image. These were shot on average about a half stop dark. ISO 1000 or 1250 would have been ideal here. There was also significant light fall off in the corners. But I am stubborn and decided I needed to prove you can get shots with the lens... that it will track and focus for basketball.

Here are a few more shots from the next day...
