CS2 as well though I still have PS7 installed as well and every once in a while fall back to it.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

CS2 isn't hard..it's expensive. It's everything elements has, and then some. You don't have to always use every feature of photoshop..it's just there in case you need it.

Elements is fine for basic stuff...pretty limited for me, though.

Camera bodies range from the rebel series all the way up to 1 series(Canon's pro line).
What are you looking to spend?
What are you looking to shoot with the telephoto?

long distance as in a telephoto lens?... there's a couple of options the one i'm considering is the 100-400L... and there's also the Bigma which is a 50-500... for outdoor shooting (as in landscapes?) you'd like a wide angle.. I believe Canon and sigma both have nice versions.. I do like my tammy 17-50.. wide enough to get the job done but still versatile enough to use for walk-around shooting and portraits..

by the way I use CS2 and occasionally PSPX...

Canon 50mm f1.8 Tamron 17-50 f2.8
Canon 70-200f4.0L 100-400L aka (Chuck)
a couple of bags and a lot of big ideas

I'm another CS2 user, I think that you will find more people on here use Photoshop than any other software, there really isn't an equal when it comes to serious use. Elements is OK I suppose, I've only tried it twice though and found it very limited compared to CS2.

Yes, CS2 is complex to learn but that is because it is so feature filled and gives so much control, rather than simple option tick boxes like some 'competitors'. It looks much more daunting than it actually is, it doesn't take long to pick up the basics, then you can learn new techniques as you go along. I doubt many (if any) members on here know how to fully use everything in there, we all pick the parts that suit our needs and learn to use those to get the results we want.

As for a telephoto lens, it really does depend on what you want it for. All the big Canon lenses do a good job, so choose the one that fits your needs best. If you are looking for an all-rounder that covers most bases though, I use the 100-400L IS which is a very popular lens and a good all-rounder, which I rate highly. It really does depend on your needs though, others may be better for you.

Capture One (C1) to convert RAW files to 16bit tif's - at this stage I apply a very small amount of 'capture' sharpening and do a very basic levels and a white balance adjustment if required.
Adobe Photoshop CS2 for any other post processing or effects.

Camera - Canon 20D/BG-E2 & Canon EOS30/BP-300 35mm Film Body (I still like to dabble with film!)
Telephoto - Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 - A poor man's Canon 70-200 :-)

More importantly, how did you guys learn to use the software you have? Have you found any good DVD tutorials?

I can barely work the basics of PS7 so I use almost exclusively the DPP that came with my camera and a noise reducer...

I'm still learning my CS. I just play with things all the time. But I wouldn't use anything other than Photoshop.
