A few from Bristol Rugby vs. Bath Rugby - 27/12/2006. Crap light at Ashton Gate. So inconsistent across the park. Really bad and the worst I have shot in in some time, though we always say that !!!To many hot and dark spots.....as such exposure not quite as good as could be. Hammered down again and I now cannot recall the last time I shot prem or international rugby in the dry!

Roll on 1/1/2007 - Sale Sharks, Manchester. I hear its sunny up north?

Pete,

As usual some superb images in there....liking all of them, but 6 jumped out at me for some reason! Judging by some of the noise in them the lighting looks like it was appalling (as you said!!).

And sunny up north?! You are kidding aren't you? Was actually hoping to get the Sale game at New Year, however thats fallen through sadly (unless you want an "assistant"!)

Good work though as ever!

Thanks mate. Ashton Gate = woeful. Considering its a league ground and all. Still, job done and not into the plastic noiseware look that others use.

Re - Sale. Will see what I can do, cant promise anything but will get back to you. Dont be upset if its a no though mate. Usual accreditation rules apply and I am shooting besoke for the club!

Pete.

Meant to ask whether you used any NR on these actually, couldn't tell as it didn't look like noise "usually" does.

and re Sale...thank you......and have a peek at your PM inbox.

Cool.

You know what, the more I look at my stock from this game the more I think I need to give all of my kit a major clean up.....cant put my finger on it, other than poor exposure or crap on the sensor....

Really nice work Pete,

There are some top photos in there. The level of noise does look high for only 1600. If you exposure is off, then this will account for the level of noise.

Thanks.

Have spoken to my agency partner who also had some awful noise and a couple of other local freelancers who had some 'odd' noise - we are putting it down to the lighting however, though as I said, the ex. was out here or there.

I went back over some stock shot elsewhere this season and my average is 1600 @ 2.8 with 1/400 and nothing like the noise evident here. Example here -

Massive difference!

Well that's a first. The last image is far far better noise wise.

Where do you normally position your self with Rugby with a single lens (300L)? I've got my first game tomorrow and trying to work out the best position.

Always dependant on the club really but I like to go either at the 22 line facing into the pitch if a large pitch or behind the posts towards the corners so you can cover the middle of the park as well as the wing if smaller. There is no ideal place really as the when the ball is being mauled about the backs will move and the play will ebb and flow all over the park.

Wait for the action, fill the frame and at 300 dont shoot anything too far away as you will simply chimp it away later on.

Pete.

I have shot numerous sports. To me, rugby is the most photogenic. Speed is reasonable to follow, player expressions are clear, always some mud and taut muscles. You have done a really nice job with these. Noise is a little high - might want to try running them through some noise reduction software like "neat image". I also agree image 6 with scrum in background is really nice.

are the lights really that bad at ashton gate, to say its a league ground thats surprising. But i think you just have to make the best you can of it, sometime conditions work against you thats when the really good photographer stands out, no matter what getting the job done ,if the paper you are shooting for a happy then thats all that matters.Btw Pete i think your positioning advice is just about spot on from my experence. If the team you are shooting are getting hammered tho be prepeared to move a bit further up field if you are allowed to,The only other thing i can add is if possible to do some research on the way a team plays it can help if you have some idea whats coming next.

Well, I have never had noise like it, nor others I have spoken to. Just seems like a one off.

Quite. Totally agree. Bristol are happy and images in situ on site and ready for the programme for the next home game on 7/1/2007 vs. Northampton.

The 'majority' of my shots are of Bristol's go to men, ergo Shaun Perry, Lee Robinson, Alfie To'Oala etc. Bristol are a wing team in essence and Robinson, Morgan, Lima etc see a lot of the ball.

Finally, nice that a thread here has continued debate. I was starting to think that this board was far to clicky with certain posters only bothering with certain posters and some forgetting where they have come from. Heck well all started somewhere.

Pete.

Nice shots,
I missed a match yesterday as i was so tired, but i shooted before at night time with good light exposure and the results was WOW, just too bad i don't have 300L, hehe.
I saw one shooter only got 300 there last sunday. just my chance to get good actions shots and tighter was very low. too bad
