Are tripods allowed in hand luggage? Anyone got any up to date info on this?

It seems to vary at the option of hte inspectors and the airline gate and flight crew. Better to just pack it right from the start.

it depends on where you are as well. here in oz, you can buy tripods in the duty free section on the air-side of customs. i have also seen them in airports in Singapore, indonesia, HK, and thailand.

the downside to checking a tripod is if it's lost or stolen, the airline is only responsibile for about $21 US per kilo of checked luggage - as outlined in the warsaw convention (which i have learned the hard way :( ). so i'd recommend insurance on you checked gear.

I'd ask the airline before packing.

I flew recently and put the tripod in my suitcase for the hold but carried on my camera, lenses and other bits. There were no problems except that they thoroughly searched my hand luggage (Lowepro backpack) after seeing my Giotto rocket blower on the X-ray screen! I had to agree with them that it does look rather like a rocket propelled grenade!

Why would you want to take your tripod on the plane?

I'd have terrible experiances with checking baggage, damange loss etc. Sure you can get $ from the airline but the time and hassel is just not worth it for me. Just my .02 cents.

about 2 or 3 years ago i was thinking the same thing so i put the rocket blower in the change tray. it didn't even show up on the xray, even when they switched it to explosives mode. it did draw some strange looks and a few non-repeatable (in this forum) comments/suggestions. mine is in my carry-on all of the time. they're always more concerned about the 1 series batteries and small foldable reflector.

My bag seemed to spend a long time in the machine. I think the operator stopped the belt and used diferent settings to examine my bag because of all the lenses and stuff. When the search guy held up the rocket blower to show her she nodded so I reckon it was that she was concerned about. At least I didn't get guns pointed at me!

My tripod gets packed into my hard suitcase for check-in. Never tried taking it as hand baggage. Also, my my camera bag is heavy enough that I didnt want more to lug around!!
