I consider the "digital negatives" to be the finished files, including any pp, in jpeg for the client. I also offer more extensive pp for a small fee, but basic images include some pp. I give my clients 1600x2400 res files. I use DPP to resize and rename the files for the clients.

On my end: I keep a backup of the original file, straight out of the camera, and a copy of the pp files that were given to client as my "digital negatives".

Do you set this on the camera before you shoot or is there a way to save it as medium, small etc?

Do most of you resize the image to 300 dpi and make it 8x12 or do you just leave it original. (eg. 40 x 60 72dpi) Sorry if this is a basic question but I'm not sure how everyone else handles it.

I think maybe he set it up in the menu for RAW + M, instead of just RAW only?

how do you define digital negatives? back in film days, you had actual films to hold on to. but with digital films.. would the original raw file or the final PP high resolution images be considered as digital negatives?

what's your take?

thanks and happy new year to all~~

Digital negatives are the RAW files. What I call the "developed" TIFF/JPG files are the version waiting to be printed. If I were doing work for hire, I would not give our JPGs unless the client is specifically paying extra for them. Otherwise they can pay less for the RAW files and let them do the developing, if they have anyone capable, of the RAWs again. :)
