I bought some extension tubes recently and decided to add a red 'The Pod' to my order as it was reduced and looked handy.

I've read a few other's comments about it and see that some even use it with long lenses (400mm was mentioned in one post).

My question is: How?! I tried it with my Tamron 17-50 mounted and it flopped fowards. I even removed around 1/3 of the plastic filler beans which helped a bit, but I still found it tricky to position where I'd like.

I might try filling it with steel bearings to give it more weight. Any other suggestions on how to use it successfully?

I got a "big red" for christmas. I have been using with my 100-400 IS shooting through the car window (practicing for an upcoming safari). I attached a monfrotto quick disconnect to the pod and to my foot of the big lens - and also removed some of the "beans". It seems to work well for me - but still learning how to optimize positioning.

Aha, I see. So you're holding the camera and using the Pod as a rest. I had hoped that I could use it as a support in situations where I can't use my tripod.

I think it was designed to be only a rest, and it works quite well in that capacity. I would never attempt to leave a camera unattended on it.

I didn't plan on precariously balancing it on a post like this, but I had hoped it'd allow me to position my camera on a table or wall. It's fine with lighter lenses, it sits perfectly with my 50mm attached. I just wondered how people used it with longer, heavier lenses.
