Well, I found out pretty quick that snow is a little tricky to expose for. Increasing the exposure time to get rid of the gray is a hit or miss adjustment. The gray doesn't always show up on the camera but the histogram proved to be the best tool to use. Had to increase the exposure time by a full stop, or 1 1/3 stop to get the right balance.

What do you think?
C&C very much welcomed.

Yeah, I spent a day shooting snow and realising it was grey afterwards! The next day I checked the histogram on every shot :-)

Really like the first one, nice shot. Number two, a little more compostion thought, like the first one? Nice though.

I like them a lot Frank, specially the first one. I like the colourful sky. I think you nailed the exposure.

Excelent shots, really like the exposure, 1 to 2 stops is about right for snow, you really have to fool the meter because of the reflection you get. In the days of manual SLR's was take a meter reading and than open the lens by 1 to 2 f-stops.

Great shots with the first being my favorite. I like the snow on the rocks and the reflection.

Thats unbelievable! That first shot is exactly the kind of photos I try to capture! Very nice work!

Is that completely out of the camera? Any filters?

First one does it for me, everything balances out exceptionally well. Slight noise in the sky, running a gentle blur tool over it could remove it?

Pleasant composition and good exposure but 2 main problems that you should try to avoid when replacing sky.

1) The reflection in the water still has the original sky showing.
2) There is a lighter band between the sky and trees where it is is difficult to make a selection.

Come on all you other guys this is supposed to be an opportunity for constructive criticism where we can all learn.

Very nice shots Frank,

The first one on my screen the tips of the trees appear darker then the rest of the trees
it is a little more in the pronounced in the center.

I don't see anything that would suggest the sky was replaced.

Like the first one...sky is a bit noisy but I'm sure you knew that.
Snow is very tricky to shoot. I was down to La Manche park yesterday and shot a pile of stuff I'm trying to process properly.

The sky doesn't look replaced to me.

I think you did well with the exposures frank, snow is indeed tricky. Could be just a hint more white I suppose. Both are nice compositions but I prefer the 2nd one, the hills blend well with the dark moody sky.

First time, Frank? What did you do in the winter before that? No camera? ;) Looking good. I prefer the first one. The second one would have been really nice with a blue sky/clouds mixture.

I'm going to venture a guess that Frank used an ND grad filter, thus making the reflection of the sky in the water brighter and different looking.
