I don't know if this is the right place to post this, or exactly what I was going for with this picture. I just was trying to play with depth of field a bit, with the kit lens. ISO 1600, so a bit grainy..

I'm not really sure what you're going for, but for me the composition doesn't really work; it's a bit too 'straight up the middle'... Also the little white area, top left corner, is a bit distracting. ;)

You have managed to get a nice shallow DOF though, very shallow for the kit lens.

I agree. The subject is not that exciting and then you placed it in a boring position. It would have worked much better in a diagonal treatment. Try again with it going from bottom left to upper right. And, have the entire pen sharp this time.

i think this is fantastic! the rule of thirds, while handy, won't kill anybody if broken occasionally. if everybody put the pen diagonally, then all pictures would look the same. that to me is boring. i think some small improvement you can make is 1) filling in that corner in the top left, 2) darkening the left side of the shot so the darkness catches the eye as much as the lightness. Im not sure, but i think the shadow of the pen shouldn't be cut off on the bottom.

nice work!:D

I fixed a lot on the image. It still would have been 100% better if the pen had been on a diagonal. Here is my version.

I never mentioned the rule of thirds with this image. And Diagonal is just one of many kinds of compositions. What was said was that it was boring and static straight up the middle.

ah . .okaaay. right, the rule of thirds comment had nothing to do with you. i simply meant its refreshing to see that particular rule broken. then . . . i started a whole new sentence referring to diagonals. im sorry to see that you have jumped to conclusions. ill be sure to specify in the future when commenting on what other members have said. i still think this photo is interesting because of the line drawn down the middle.

the work you've done on it looks good
