If I could afford this lens I would pick one up in a heart beat.

I hope it's that good! If it's anywhere close to my 24-70 and 70-200 (MK 1), I'll be ecstatic.

My lens came in today. Unfortunately, I'm still on crutches so,
I haven't been able to give the lens a test run. A couple of things
I have already decided - Push/Pull zoom is just fine. Size/Weight
is no big deal. IS is very nice. There is going to be a learning
curve for this lens.

Here is a snapshot I took today:

Nice Tony.
Are you shooting in JPG or RAW?
Just remember, if shooting in JPG, Lightroom 3 may not have the profile of the lens.

Shot in RAW.

Experimented with DxO, DPP and PS CS4 for RAW conversions.
DxO and DPP do lens profiling. I have much to learn. All that
aside, I haven't notice too terribly much distortion (maybe DxO
and DPP are doing their jobs, lol) I worried a great deal about
oversharpening this image. With contrasty hair like on that cat,
it's really easy to get the blotchy, muddy look.

I plan on downloading the trial version of LR3 and testing it some time
soon. (My DxO is a trial version as well).

It is very very difficult to lug around a 1D + 28-300 while on crutches. Makes
my subject options very limited ;-)a At this point, I believe this is going to
become my walkaround lens once I heal up. I bought a Black Rapid strap
for this very purpose.

I think you do much better job than me. The lens will be shine on your hand.

CS4/5 is too complicate for me; DPP is bit limit; LR3 is just 'right' for me so far :)

Still on crutches so, just a snapshot.
I should have upped the f-stop a bit for some DOF.

Focus distance ~ 6 feet

Whoa, that expression. This is not a happy cat.

Nice job lugging this around on crutches. I couldn't adequately control a 1D and this lens even when I was on both feet and both hands available! Some serious strength training is in order to use this combination. It's been a while since I've laid my hands on this lens and haven't been able to justify the purchase considering that mortgage hanging over my head.

Some day though, I shall buy it again.

I wish more people who were critical of this lens, who have subsequently never used it and instead just complain about the price and weight, came to this thread and looked around. I love my 28-300L, and if you don't need f/2.8 speed, I find this lens can serve the purpose of the 24-105L and 70-300L at the same time. Not to mention if you can find a good used one it isn't nearly as expensive as the current new price, which I swear went up again believe it or not...

Great shots!
