X_tan,

Bad news. Saturday, I was attending a national motocross race near Dallas. I thought that race would be a great test for the 28-300. Unfortunately, I dropped my 1DMK4 with the 28-300 attached onto a concrete driveway. I nearly vomited. The viewfinder broke and is hanging from the body. The lens mount of the 28-300 was damaged and must be replaced. I do not know if any internal damage has been done to either the body or the lens. Currently, the lens and body are packed for shipping to Canon on Tuesday. Not a good day for me.

Looks like it's able to handle sports which is what I was going to determine that morning that I dropped mine. Glad to see this.

It's been 3(?) weeks since I sent off my gear. It looks like the 1D is going to be shipped soon. The 28-300, however, still looks like its being repaired.

Hi Two,

As long as Canon can fix them, should be ok.

I did few thing wrong with shooting sport:

1. Need Tv mode with sport at least 1/300 fast @ 300mm; but I used Av mode  - Need the widest aperture to isolate the subject.

2. @ 1/300 plus, using IS or not is not the importance

Try again next weekend ;)

x_tan,

yes, 1/300 should be the minimum. But, I still prefer to use Av. I like having control over depth of field and don't have any issues with moving around the ISO to get the combination of ss/f-stop I need.

I agree on IS. I almost never use it when shooting sports as the shutter speed is usually plenty fast.

Shot at 300mm F8 and 1/800

I shot this from about 150 feet on a cloudy but not gloomy day a couple of weeks ago. I find that the lens does a great job for what it is. I use it in Alaska because of the varied subjects and distances that I have to deal with. I have even had some success with it shooting flowers and bugs as long as the light is good.

Nice shoot, deauxrite!

I have 4 prime lenses now and shooting more prime than zoom this day; but I still keep this 28-300 for my Alaska trip in the future!

Welcome to POTN :D

Just check on the FM site, it rate this lens on 9.1!

http://www.fredmiranda.com …owproduct.php?product=217 (external link)

It is not way to be rate 9.1; max I can give it 8.0.

To X Tan: I have a 24mmL, 135mmL and a 50mm F1.4. for low light situations, been contemplating getting this one to cover the focal range that I most likely will use during the day time. If you're rating this one as an 8, just curious how you rate the other prime lens that you have? Many thanks.

P.S. like your photos taken by this lens as well as those from your collection of prime lens..

Hi kwyml12106,

As I just get 24L, I can't say much about it, ? 9.5.

135L I give it 9.95 for 'lack' of IS (not a complain, I'm just bit greedy :D).

100L, I give it 10 as nothing to complain.

85L, I give it 9.7 as it's bit slow at low light.

Thank you so much for the reply..looks like this is your least favorite lens out of the ones you currently own. I'd much prefer a black colored & lighter lens to be stealth. Other than the weight of this lens, what do you see as the minuses? It's really hard to tell because you make taking beautiful photos so effortless with this lens.
