Canon EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 L IS USM

I come back here from time to time to check out what you guys have been up to. I see x_tan is still posting Antarctica shots. Lovely colours.

I have purchased the Sigma 50-500mm (the latest version - the Bigma), and I have to say I am impressed with it, it is on my 5D3 almost all the time. It obviously can't handle wide angle but a pano sorts that out.

Sometimes I still wonder about the Canon 28-300. But it is 3x the cost of the Sigma I am using. Plus I get a bit more at the tele end, which I have found useful, especially when my wife spots some sort of bird that she wants me to try to catch. It might not be as quick on autofocus as the Canon, but I am not complaining. That and the Canon 16-35mm are my two main lenses these days. I think though if I had gone for the Canon, I'd still have needed the 16-35 for really wide angle. Just thought I'd chip in a little, and say 'Hi'. I like the pics, but can you tell me if you have the old version of the Sigma 50/500 or the latest version. Mine is the latest version, and I think I might have to rent the Canon 28-300 to really compare the two, like you did, however as you can see I am wondering if yours is the latest one. If so, it seems that you might be thinking that the Canon's IQ is sufficiently better to tempt you. What would be nice would be to take the same images with each lens with the same camera, just to compare like for like.
I do love the 50/500, but these guys here do keep tempting me with the Canon.

My Sigma 50-500mm is the DG APO HSM stabilized model. I think it may be in my hands brand new from B/H 4 months now.
Dont' get me wrong, the 50-500 is a great lens. I read a pro photographers blog where he took that lens alone and did Alaska (I took 6 lenses).
The Canon's advantages are maybe better glass (at least I think so IQ wise), faster for sure at 3.5
If all I had was the 50-500mm I'd be happy, that extra 200mm is nice.

So I bought this guy and have been very happy. What I haven't been happy with is my quite aging camera body not being able to keep up with it! Time for an upgrade soon.

I haven't had much time to play with it, but this is the best I've gotten so far playing around at night with the local surfers.

Coupon-will be curious to see which body you upgrade to.

Looks like this is the more active thread on the 28-300mm. Well I'm officially an owner now woot woot woot.....crap weather currently but looking forward to wielding this bulldog streetsweeper lens!
