Attended the local HS basketball tournament where both the boys and girls were playing. The boys lost their first game and won their second game. The girls dominated both games they played to remain undefeated.

The gym was an older gym which forced me down to a 400 ss so you will see some minor motion blur. All pictures taken at 1600 iso in manual.

Comments and Criticism always appreciated.

They look good. Just watch for the slight greening of the skin like in shot 2. You can clean this up by adding some blue in. Otherwise, well done... cheers.

Pics look good Matt. I just went through mine from the same game. I had some problems with WB. Should have shot in RAW like you did!

Good to meet you BTW.

Thanks Croasdail, I went back and tried to fix the green in shot #2. I have a hard time detecting the green tint, my son on the other hand picks it out right away. Now when I perform PP, I have to get my son involved ;)

Dan,

It was definately nice meeting someone that could show me some tricks with my own gear  . Shooting RAW definately helps me out with the white balance. I think the best answer is to shoot a custom white balance at the game.

Any hints on focusing? I have a problem with getting my 85 to focus dead on wide open when shooting BB. I have tried thumb button focus and standard foucs with the shutter button.

Richard,

What I have learned from others on this forum is to use the center focus point and ai servo mode. I also use the thumb button for focusing.

I really try and anticipate the shot to allow the camera time to lock in on the subject before firing a burst of shots. When I don't give the camera time to really lock in on the subject is when I get shots that are out of focus.

By shooting the same team on multiple occasions, I have learned the players habits. I feal this really helps in being able to anticipate the shot and lock in the focus.

Make sure you are also firing a burst of shots, fill up the buffer. On the canon 20d, I can only fire off a burst of 6 shots in raw which happens fast and on multiple occasions. I use to rarely fill up the buffer. I now know that if I have filled up the buffer, chances are good that several of those shots will be in focus.

The next time I shoot a BB game, I am going to try and only shoot JPG which allows for a larger buffer (20 images vice 6 for raw). This will require me to set a custom white balance since I won't have that luxary in post porcessing. Hopefully the benefit of the larger buffer will offset the advantages of shooting raw.

I hope this helps.
