Hmm. Looks like the 1D MKII N. The spec is the same too. That goes new for around £2,500. Given that most people try to get at least 75% of the price paid of everything back, it would seem to me that this camera could be a dubious purchase. I am not saying "stolen" or "fraud" but I'd think at this price that it was highly likely.

Even if you could "pick it up" how sure can you be that it's not stolen?

According to UK law, if something stolen is discovered in someone's posession then two things are likely to happen:
1. If the person cannot "prove" adequately that it was an innocent purchase then he will be prosecuted for "receiving stolen goods".
2. The item will be removed from the person and returned to either the rightful owner or the owner's insurance company.

It's a lose-lose situation for the person that buys stolen goods - even accidentally. It's highly unlikely that the unfortunate purchaser would get their money back from the criminal that stole the camera in the first place. Criminals normally blow their ill-gotton gains on trash like drink, drugs, gambling etc.

All it would take for it to be discovered as stolen would be for the police to carry out a spot inspection of the seriel number or for the service centre (should it need service at some point in the future) to check against the stolen goods list (which increasingly they do).

There was a 1D Mk II listed on the edinburgh craiglist a while back - £1000 was a bit cheap, but the pictures showed the N variety. I spent some time emailing the seller, but they seemed pretty shifty, and I didn't have the cash available to buy.
