Just realised that I haven't posted for a while. I thought I'd better take a break from the festivities at long last and share a random selection of recent pics! It's been a fairly busy period on the shooting front so here's a bit of this... and a bit of that. EXIF should be intact throughout.

Let's start with a goal. Barnet score against Mansfield and put a solid nail in Peter Shirtliff's managerial coffin...

Lovely images there Gav - you definitely have been a busy bee!

Is it me, or does the chap in picture #1 look as if he about to sneeze?

#3 is pick of the bunch for me though, very atmospheric....bet you loved that cameraman wandering up and down in front of you though!!!

Happy New Year!

Cheers Paul... it was a no-win situation with the SKY cameraman. Initially I hoped he might stay at the other end of the pitch... but, of course, he had to come down and join me and the lino... errr... referee's assistant. Us togs come a pretty serious second behind the TV folk

It looks a bit drier at Barnet than it was there today, absolutely drenched. Just got home, and still drying out!!!

Really nice set Gavin. Love the wide fog image.

Do you usually sit on the same side as the 3rd ref? I always try and sit opposite them as it drives me nuts with them walking in front of me. Basketball on the other hand, you can't win.

How many miles do you think you cover every year getting to and from assignments? I'm just curious as a lot of your shots are from a lot of different stadiums.

Thanks Darren...

It's often worth avoiding sitting on the same touchline as the referee's assistant can be downright annoying.

However, at a number of Football League grounds, the restrictions dictate that you can only work from one side of the pitch. As a result, if you want to cover the attack of a particular team, you have to live with the lino's toing and froing. Also, changing ends at half-time may not be practical at the busier games.

Also, the lighting and/or backgrounds and/or shooting brief may influence your choice of position and oblige you to work from a particular area.

EDIT: Mileage.... errr... a fair few. All logged

Quite interesting at Barnet today, half the floodlights failed, and they played about 25 minutes with only the ones on the main stand side working. Thankfully, I was on that side, so no shadows. Credit to the ref and both teams though, they played on until they came back again.

Nice to see you at New Lodge today Gavin. The last two pics are of particular interest to me as I know what terrible conditions you were working in. By some miracle I've managed to muster up 20 to send to the programme (extremely noisy in the 2nd half). The way the sun was shining when I left home I nearly left all my waterproofs behind, glad I didn't although luckily the game was over before the heavens really opened.

Pleased to hear you survived the day Sir Vic!

The lights at Barnet look very unpromising. However, because they are fairly low and close to the pitch, they do provide a reasonable source of illumination. Stroke of luck that you were on the right side of the pitch when they failed.

Good to see you as well Matt! I've nearly dried out. Hope you have too.

Conditions were truly appalling except for that brief period midway throught the first-half when I cranked the ISO up to 1250. Wow.

You've done very well to get 20 pics together... I've struggled to muster the basic 12 I usually need. Total shambles

Here's one from when the gloom was really closing in at the end of the first-half and the rain was increasing in intensity...

In fact, it's one of the few that I managed to get even remotely in focus  ;)

Gavin,

That last photo that you posted, I can see its at ISO3200 - have you dont any noise reduction on it, or is it more or less straight out of the camera?

Am rather impressed with the noise (or lack of!) if there is no NR on it!!

It was proofed in BreezeBrowser Pro which I use for speed. The BBP proofing module has built-in NR and sharpening.

In this case the NR was set to 'Low'. What that equates to in absolute terms, I can't say... but the effect is usually OK for these web sized images.

EDIT: A further ISO3200 example for good measure:

Ok, you're showing off now ;) :D

That looks rather impressive really!

Off at a slight tangent - what do you use more frequently, BB or PM? Or which do you prefer?
