I currently have a Manfrotto 3021 and a gimbal head which I like but wish to have a lightweight Gitzo carbon fiber tripod. When looking at their selection I got so confused. I would probably be able to narrow my selection down if I could physically see them all but no one in town sells them so all I can do is look at pictures.

I plan on using it with the 500 f4, price doesn't matter. I just want it to be lightweight and sturdy.

You should get no smaller than a series 3 for that lens. The 3540 is going to be available Jan/Feb and would probably be a killer tripod for you - weighs 3.8 lbs and will hold 39lbs.

I have a 3021 as well (actually 3221 black) and according to someone else on POTN, the Gitzo 55 seems to be the comparable tripod in height and sturdiness, although a small fortune to purchase!

Once past the initial price shock of carbon fiber Gitzo its very sturdy and light and effortless to work with. Prior to the Gitzo I would find reasons not to pack my tripod, now I almost always carry, enabling me to stay out into the evening for shots. I am using the G1257. The single twist upon extending the legs makes for a very quick and quiet setup.
