I spent about 2 hours on the net learning how to use the settings on my camera. The smaller the F#, the better the DOF. Right? So, off I ran to take yet another shot of an ornament. I may have to keep the tree up a while longer...... How did I do? I do believe the EXIF is attached.

Not a better DOF actually, but shallower... Lets see...

Smaller f/# number --> Larger aperture = more light in the sensor
Smaller f/# number --> Faster shutter speed or lower ISO to compensate the exposure
Smaller f/# number --> Shallower DOF

Bigger f/# number --> Smaller aperture = less light in the sensor
Bigger f/# number --> Slower shutter speed or higher ISO to compensate the exposure
Bigger f/# number --> Deeper DOF

Basically, a perfect exposure is the perfect balance between ISO, aperture and shutter speed...

Now, regarding the composition of the shot... It could have been better if you follow the rule of thirds (external link)... And you could have also included another ornament, or lights, or something of the sort...

Okay........ I think I've got it now. I'll have to give it another try with something else this time.

Keep going, you will get there. I was in same boat not very long ago. I was quite proud of myself when I could eventually get right DOF+exposure almost everytime.

I've been playing with manual flash and exposure compensation lately, my shots are steadily improving as will yours ;)

Good first DOF shot, Ill look forward to seeing more.
