Not a better DOF actually, but shallower... Lets see...
Smaller f/# number --> Larger aperture = more light in the sensor
Smaller f/# number --> Faster shutter speed or lower ISO to compensate the exposure
Smaller f/# number --> Shallower DOF
Bigger f/# number --> Smaller aperture = less light in the sensor
Bigger f/# number --> Slower shutter speed or higher ISO to compensate the exposure
Bigger f/# number --> Deeper DOF
Basically, a perfect exposure is the perfect balance between ISO, aperture and shutter speed...
Now, regarding the composition of the shot... It could have been better if you follow the rule of thirds
... And you could have also included another ornament, or lights, or something of the sort...
