SD800 IS Owners - Please help me!

Very simply, all I want to do is to be able to change the file names of the photos I transfer from my camera to the PC. For example, instead of IMG23.jpg, I would like to be able to have the transfer software automatically change the name to the date the photo was taken, ie: 2006_12_26_0001.jpg.

I am using a PC and do not have a card reader.

--The CameraWindow utility doesn't have this feature (or at least I cannot find it)

--I've tried DownloaderPro but that program doesn't seem to be compatible with the SD800.

--The EOS utility (Which supports this feature) doesn't work with the SD800.

I am really at my wits end. I think this should be something relatively simple. Am I missing something? Can anyone give me some suggestions?

Thanks

Can't speak to DL Pro's compatibility with the SD800 since I use card readers, but a card reader's cheap and DL Pro is one of the easiest and most flexible ways of renaming files out there, so I'd suggest picking up a card reader. It'll also save battery life in your camera and is faster than d/l direct from camera.

Use the Canon software to download the images to a temporary folder, then use Downloader Pro from the temporary folder to the permanent folder.

I copy the files from the camera to the new folder using only a Windows Explorer and then use the Renamer (external link). This is a small, free and very user-friendly program, which lets you to rename the files pretty much as you wish. I, for example, rename my CRW_XXXX.CRW files to OC_YYMMDD_XXXX.CRW (like CRW_4653.CRW to OC_070101_4653.CRW)- it's done with just a few mouse clicks. The date is automatically extracted from the file metadata.

Best wishes,
Oleg.

I've used a few of the cheap ones from here (external link). They've worked great.

Cheers.

Pretty much any new one will be good. I generally get SanDisk cards and readers across the board.

I recommend the Sandisk reader because I ran into problems with cheap readers I bought from Ebay. For example - one of the cheap readers refused to recognize the Lexar Professional CF card, while reading my Sandisk and Transcend cards just fine. In the end I bought 2-3 different readers over the years and spent more money than I would spend on a new Sandisk reader.

The Sandisk Imagemate perform flawlessly with all my cards.

Best wishes,
Oleg.
