I have the S2 as well, so I'll say congrats on your purchase. Auto in daytime will normally be fine if you don't want anything more, but for dark or night shots, if you're gonna use auto you better get ya a tripod, or else most of your shots will be blurry due to the slower shutter speed needed for dark time shots. My normal advice is READ the manual that comes with it. It's an easy read and does a good job of explaining the different settings and will give you a better understanding of some basics. I too was a p & s only, but wanted to learn photog, so I bought the S2 and I almost 99% of the time now use it in manual only so I can control the shutter speed, the ISO, and the aperture to achieve the kind of shot I desire. It's really much easier than you might think so just try after learning a bit.
