Unfortunetly my mom cant afford to get pictures taken of my sister for her senior year book. So i figured i would give it a try for her, but dont know much about lighting. I plan on getting some AB's eventually, but cant right now. I have heard of people buying stuff from home depot and putting together a cheap little studio and this is what i would like to do. If ANYONE can help me put together a list of things i need to get decent pictures for my sister, like lamps and bulbs(what kind of bulbs?) that would be great. any help would be appriciated! and i do already have a 420EX.

The school should supply her with a photographer to do the drape for the yearbook, so you shouldn't have to buy any lights. In my opinion just take her to a park or a cool place that she likes to hang out or any cool looking place and take pictures there. Get some ideas for poses etc from websites of photographers that do seniors.

it's free getting pictures taken for the yearbook, buying them is a different story.

I have used floodlamps and they work OKAY at best. For a background, you can use posterboard.

I agree with the others. The school should have the pictures made for the yearbook even if you don't buy any. As for as you making them, like Anglext said, go the the park or some place she enjoys and shoot.

Since you have this option of doing the shoot yourself, I'd suggest you look at some of the old yearbooks the school has on file and see what backdrop is good. I know the gray background is the most used, but I took all of my photos outside, not yearbook, but senior shots and the families loved them.

Check with the yearbook advisor BEFORE you shoot as most yearbook printing companies have specific requirements as to the size of the face in the image. In the two local high schools in my county that permit the students to submit their own image the image MUST be a standard wallet size (2.5 x 3.25) and the face can be not be larger or smaller than their specific requirements. If you submit anything else it won't be in the yearbook.
