A few problems & questions about the Simpleviewer gallery "program". Advice needed!

Hi all!
So, since I've now converted to using a digital SLR I'm thinking about making a web page, not commercial in any way but just a page to display some nice images on. Searching these forums and using Google I've came upon this program Simpleviewer, which seems pretty good to me. I've seen a few galleries done with Simpleviewer a long time before I ever thought about making my own web page, and I like the general design and easy usability of the program. As I'm about as far from a techno-freak as you can get, I'm afraid I'll be needing some help from you more experienced users on how to setup a working gallery on the web.DOWNLOAD A SAMPLE OF THE GALLERY I'VE BEEN MAKING SO FAR HERE! (external link)
<---That's the file I'll be asking my n00bie questions from. It's a .rar file, and I guarantee it's virus free, Norton checked.;)

So, double clicking on the included index.html will, at least for me, bring up a demo of how the final page will look in my browser. Now in there are ATM only two images.

So looking at the main window, it looks like this:

IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: 404 | MIME changed to 'text/html' | Byte size: ZERO

(NOTE TO MODERATORS: I TRIED TO RESIZE THE PHOTO TO 800X600 MAX, BUT THE TEXT BECAME UNREADABLY SMALL!)

Those were the cosmetical questions...
Now onto the more practical ones.

How the h*ll does it really work out with hosting it?
My goal is, to somehow (*shrugs unknowingly*) get the gallery to display in the big textbox at my (free, Google-hosted) webpage HERE (external link).

Is it possible anyhow? Apparantly, I couldn't fit the higher resolution (~800x600) image to the right, it isn't wide enough. But could I make the row of thumbnails to appear at the top, in one row, scrolling horisontally, from left to right, and the big image would be displayed under it, or could I?
If that'd be possible I'd prefer it much more than having the image open in a completely new tab/window, it's somehow so crude, makes it feel like I loose the "cozyness" of watching through a gallery.

OK, to get back to hosting the simpleviewer gallery, how do you actually make it work? The folder which was generated on the desktop when I created the gallery through Picasa apparantly includes the needed information, but where should I upload it? Or should I? And what should I enter in the text box @ my googlepage to display the gallery? This is where I'm so completely lost!

Final few questions before I promise to let you go...

I. Are there any other gallery programs than Simpleviewer that you'd recommend?
II. How do I add more images to my gallery once I'm finished PP'ing them?

Thanks for taking the time to read this, looking forward to your replies, and above all,

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2007!

Well. I'm here and reading.
Like other gallery makers, you get it running as you like on your PC and then load the whole shebang -verbatim copy- onto a server space somewhere online.

I did one a while back and as I remember the options were mentioned in the supplied txt file. Toggle whether to display file names, and where to shove the thumbnails, over, under or sides. I'll dig it up and paste it here if I can find it.

I've lost the gallery of mine you said you saw somewhere. Seems funny, but what is the url?

:)

Yeah, that was using AirTight's Simpleviewer. Its flash and I like the way the scroll wheel on the mouse works it, but it was a hassle to set up. I went back to straight html pages with a thumbnail html frame sitting in above.
I can't find that txt file. There is a good FAQ at AirTight.

If you can wait a few hours, I've got to go to a BBQ lunch.... I'll be back tonight and here's to a happy 2007.

BBQ rainchecked!

So dug around, and the options/toggles for flash display are in the xml file. You can edit it in Notepad or any text editor.

Here is the top of the file in my gallery xml file. Now because this forum is the viewer I can't use the tag chevrons. So I'll substitute a :) gif for the chevrons >

:)?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?:)
:)simpleviewerGallery maxImageWidth="999" maxImageHeight="999" textColor="0x999999" frameColor="0xBBBBBB" frameWidth="0" stagePadding="20" thumbnailColumns="8" thumbnailRows="1" navPosition="top" title="CameraJuice.com" enableRightClickOpen="true" backgroundImagePath="" imagePath="" thumbPath="":)
:)image:) (and then the listing of image pages for each image in the gallery)

If you will just use Porta to create your simpleviewer galleries, you can set all these options very easily without touching code. Just do a yahoo/google search for porta and you can download the program free. there are also extra skins available too.

Thanks! After a lot of fiddling, it finally looks like I wished!

Now then...
Hosting the gallery and making it appear somewhere.
Can you recommend any good, cheap (read:free, I'm a student...), reliable hosting service?
And how do I make the gallery appear/link to it?

Thanks!
Brewster

bannedPermanent ban

all those changes are possible

sounds like you got it, but if not let me know and I can get it for you.

a special note on simpleviewer, maybe its not kosher to day, i dunno, but if you change the text color to the background color, the simpleviewer logo disappears. Well it becomes hidden, its still there if someone was looking for it, but otherwise no one would know. The downside is the filename is no longer viewable either. I personally don't mind that, but to each their own.
