Hi all!

Well I have started the year off with a bang! I've just had my first photo's published in my local newspaper! Unfortunately I can't get the scan down to the accepted size on here without it being illegible so I can't post it. It wasn't the perfect action shot I dreamt of but instead on a day when there was little sport in my area I went to the horse races. I was shooting the parade ring when a horse went crazy throwing the jockey and I got a sequence of events. I realised that the other photographers ther missed the chain of events so I thought as a shot in the dark I'd submit it to the paper (i'd never tried it before and didn;t even know if I was emailing the right person!). I nearly fell off my chair when i recieved a reply email saying "great shots, we'd love to use them" !!! So I had 4 photo's accompanying a story entitled "Apprentice Jockey's lucky escape"

I would just like to thank everyone who has gave me advice on here since I have been a member and I hope the luck continues!

Hi, unfortunately it was only credited, mailny because when i sent it in i never dreamt of it being published so at this stage I was just happy for a credit. I guess it's a good start for a portfolio.

Yeah it was nice to see i, I don't think it has really sunk in yet, as i said I sent it in with more hope than expectation. I keep telling myself things like, it's only 'cause it was a slow news day and that no one else had pics of it, hehe very negative! It was a great way to start the year reagrdless.

I approached the editor of our local paper and signed on as a sports stringer. It doesn't pay much, but at least I'm not giving away my work. You should try it. You're worth it! :)

As someone who works in newspapers, I can tell you a couple things:

1, Stringer photographers who are willing to do just about anything are worth their weight in gold, especially if they actually take really top-notch shots.

2, Never do things for free, or as you go along it will get harder to get paid (people will figure if you did it for free before, it should remain free).

Just contact sports editors (and even news editors, if you don't mind taking any type of photos), show them a small sample of your work and go from there. Most papers have a set rate they pay stringers.
