I have never heard the term "Stringer" before ? although I have a feeling it's gonna be me :)

A stringer is a newspaper or media term. Basically a freelancer. It's actually used more on the writing side of things, but I usually use it for all freelancers. :)

But anyone looking to make a little extra $$ off their photos should call sports editors -- or news editors if you'd rather do newsy photos. If you take good shots, papers can always use them. Just don't do anything for free. Ever. Newspapers don't pay a lot as it is (our place is like $10 a photo, sometimes a bit more pending on the situation), so you don't want to give it away even more!

Thanks a lot, to be honest, I haven't heard the term stringer either but that could be for 2 reasons 1) I haven't had much to do with the industry and 2) It may not be used widely here in Australia. none the less I will be looking into opportunities as much as I can and I'm sure it'll help that I have a few published pics in my portfolio now!
