Is poker a sport?

I took some poker related shots this past week testing out my new tripod... not sure if this would be categorized as a sport though. Any C&C is welcome.

Well I guess it's a game? There's not really a games and pastimes section so I guess it's a sport! I've seen chess on here so I think you're in the right section........ maybe

Its a sport and can be quote colorfull.. Was expecting to see more diverse pics.. actual game... bit of smoke in the air.. etc

It's not a sport. It's a game. Is Chess a sport? Is Playing scrabble for $$$ a sport. No.

That being said, on to pics. I'd like to have seen macro ring flash on these or say some extreme DOF. I'd like to see some Lorek style lighting on them with a silhoutte of a player behind them. Good first step to some potentially stunning stock photography sales.

This may be awfully noobish of me... but what is Lorek style lighting?

I love the images ! And to answer the query ... poker is definitely NOT a sport. I hate turning on cable sports channels only to see people playing the GAME of poker.

I definitely agree. They need a game channel (as if there were not enough channels already!).

Poker is more of a sport than golf, but that isn't saying much.

Whoa ! Golf is a sport ... especially when you walk the entire 18 hole course on a full sized layout. I don't see poker players have to towel off or drink gator-aide to replenish fluids lost in the hot sun. I'd stack up Tiger Woods against most pro athletes. Poker players just sit and hold cards ... big deal. Lots of expended energy there. LOL

"Sport is an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. Used by itself, sport commonly refers to activities where the physical or mental capabilities of the competitor are the sole or primary determiner of the outcome."

If physical exertion is your sole qualifier for what constitutes a sport, golf rates right up there on the same scale as playing "Candyland". Whether you like it or not, poker is just as much a sport as golf.
