keep the equipment from which you upgrade? or do you try to sell it for at least somthing so can make something back to offset the upgrade? just wondering because i am getting ready to upgrade almost everything. and if you do sell your old stuff where do you usually sell it, ebay? here? local shop? any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

If you want to sell stuff, have a look at the marketplace section of POTN to get some idea of what top expect. But to tell the truth, there is nothing like an Ebay feeding frenzy to get top dollar for your wares! There are some real crazy bidders out there who are more concerned to win the auction than pay a sensible price.

Keep your head down and stay safe!

It depends on what you upgrade. If you replace a lens you may want to sell the old one, first because you now have a better one ( and usually use only one at a time), and second because glass holds it's value better than bodies do.

Bodies however can be used as a back-up or to keep a second lens mounted on and ready to shoot. Typically bodies depreciate faster so you may want to hold on to it.

Of course plan A is to get the stuff you will keep forever.

and some devils in Nigeria who are making it tough to sell anything. If you go the ebay route make sure bidders cant bid if they have no previous ebay dealings. You can also block foreign bidders.

Same here. I'm also in the process of acquiring new lenses so I can have backups for everything when I shoot weddings.

I pass on the upgraded component to others to help share the joy I get out of photography. I have passed on an Olympus 3000, Olympus 4000, a Panasonic FZ-10 and a D-Rebel(300D). When I upgrade my 20D I will probably keep it as a backup body (no plans to replace it anytime soon.) I haven't passed on any lenses yet as I have been happy with my collecton so far. I did trade in a Canon 28-135 (after purchasing the wonderful Tamrom 28-75) to help finance the cost of a 70-200 f4L however.

I sold my previous camera (Drebel) with kit lens locally. It was a nice experience spending an hour taking the buyer through the basics of DSLRs. As Kurtru says, its great to pass the joy to someone else.

I've purchased items on this forum, Fred Miranda's forum and Texas Photo Forum. So far I've not had a need nor desire to sell anything. I do have some overlap in my lenses(80-400 and 50-500), but I look at my lenses like I look at my tools. You can't use it if you don't have it. For me that pretty much covers it.

That said; If I end up with redundant coverage for some reason in the future or determine I have an item that I'm just not going to use, I'll list it here and on the forums I previously mentioned.

I buy one thing at a time over several months looking for the best deal, used on FM or POTN. And I make sure it is something I really want and "need" then just desire. Because if you read enough here about gear, you start to find yourself desiring everything, even if you absolutely dont need it.

I sell my gear on POTN or FM first because I can ask what I want for my gear and not have to pay an outrageous fee to eBay to do so. If I do not get what I want for my gear, I sell it on eBay (has only come to that once out of 20 items sold) and I start the bidding at the bare minimum I will take for the lens (28-80 L in my case) with a buy it now.
