I know you guys are going to tell me to get lenses, but i can get a brilliant deal on a brand new 1DMKIIN, and am going to purchase one as i can afford it at the moment.

now i will have enough to get another lens too so i am wondering
Canon 24-105 f4 IS L (this will be my first "L")
or sigma 24-70 f2.8
i cannot afford the extra to get the canon 24-70 f2.8L
if i get the sigma i will probably be able to afford a spare battery, another 2gb card, and filters.
i already have one sigma lens and am very happy with it so my question to you all is "is the 24-105 canon worth the extra cash over the faster sigma" ?
i generally shoot cars and motorsport, although i do take other photos too (pets, family shots etc)

thank you all in advance for the help
if i have enough left over i will purchase a POTN strap to help fund this wonderful forum

just got back from the camera shops in the city, looking at the price of the sigma i can probably get a 12-24 and 24-70 for a little more than the price of the 24-105 L

Just remember... 12-24 full frame is WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide. Will you be needing something so wide or will 24 be enough for you? 12mm will have a lot of distortions at the sides and heavy vignetting. I find it challenging to get a good composition at such widths, but that's just me. :)

Great shots are like great parking spaces... if you're not quick, it's gone!

its going on a mk2N so its a 1.3x crop not full frame

if i get the sigma 24-70 im not 100% sure whether to go for another lens (UWA) or to grab an extra battery, Remote, and more memory (1 or 2 2Gb cards)

at this stage im seriously looking at the sigma - it gives me more money to play with although im not sure on the rebates at the moment - there is supposed to be a $750 rebate on the body and i think there may be a $500 rebate on the lens - im not sure if i can get the rebates if i just buy the body though - i think i have to get a lens too.

I think that 24mm would be sufficiently wide on 1.3x crop(was your 28-80 wide enough on the wide end for you on the 350D?) . $5500 is a pretty good price, although, if it means anything to you CameraStore.com.au has it for $5,409 here (external link).
They have super quick delivery(over night) and great customer service. Although for $80 odd extra, it might be worth it to go with Gerry Gibbs. Up to you though, I always choose the cheaper option.

Either way, have fun with your new gear!

Mike

actually it probably would
28mm - wide on full frame
24mm - 1.3 crop
18mm - 1.6 crop

its kind of halfway between "standard zoom" focal lengths for 1.6 and FF - and the APS-H sensor size is halfway between too
thanks guys (and girls too) - ill let you know what i decide when i get it (should be around the 10th of this month)

sinkrate - i prefer buying from a normal store, at least that way i walk out of a shop with it and dont have to wait - other than having to wait for the battery to charge.
