Hi

I really cannot decide which legs is best for me.
I've got the 350D, Tamron 17-50 2.8, Sigma 17-70, sigma 18-200, 430ex flash.
I do not think I will get any heavier lens as I am only a hobbiest.
I would like to pair either the above legs with the 488RC2 ball head.
I am afraid the 055 pro B might be an overkill for me.
I take general family photos, urban and a bit of lanscape.
Any help wuld be much appreciated.
I am about 5 feet 11 3/4 inches if this would help.
Rgds
Pat

Hi Pat,

I've got a 190 Pro B paired with the 488RC2 and love it. I'm just a bit taller than you so hight wise it should suit. It does weigh a little bit though and this can get a bit much on a real long walk. I have a Manfrotto bag to carry it in and also a strap attached to the tripod for carrying it other times. The ball head is great also.

Thanks Greg.
May I ask where did you get yours from?
I just got a response from a seller in WA telling me that the 190 ProB is the same price $249 as the 055 Pro B of which I responded to him to reconsider. I know, I hope, for a fact, that the 190 is cheaper then the 005 (can you confirm this?).
The 488RC2 is on back order.

I bought from Rainers Camera House in the center of Brissie as I just about walk past their store to and from the train every day. I paid $195 for my 190 about 2 years ago. Is your price from Quality Camera?

The online shop is called Thats Very Nice, WA.
I am waiting for him to reply to my email to reconsider the price as he tells me the 190 is the same price as the 055.

Pat, since you are a little taller than I am (5'10") and I find the 3021BPro (US name for the 055ProB) to be just about right for me, I would strongly suggest that you get the 055ProB.

The idea with having a taller set of legs is to never have to raise the center column for everyday use. That compromises the rigidity.

I am concerned about the weight of the 055Prob compared to the 190ProB.

With a "Long Strap", the 3021BPro/055ProB is quite easy to carry across one's back.

The weight of the 3021BPro/055ProB is actually a significant benefit in doing what a tripod is supposed to do - keep a camera/lens stable.

I've pulled the trigger for the 055ProB :)

Now I've got to find the head. The 488RC2 is on back order by the seller. He will be away for 2 weeks from this Friday (holiday) so the head will be in stock in 3 weeks. I might find it somewhere else.

So wait... I've been looking at the 190PRO and the 055PRO. I know I would love the height of the 055PRO, but I'm afraid weight is quite important when traveling. Would you say the 190PRO is a bad buy?

I've only got a cheap Velbon at the moment (bought for a P&S and handycam), but I already got the 486RC2 to go with the next tripod.

I have been using the 055cb for over 10 years and if the 055 Pro B is an update of this fantastic tripod, I would say go for the 055.

The advantages of the 055 are that it can support large lenses and cameras.
It extends to 176cm and drops down so low that you can sit on the ground with a telephoto (800mm f5.6) and camera at eye height and it is still rock steady.
The legs work fully independant of each other, so they can be used in a huge combination of positions almost like a Benbo. They can be used almost hozintal, normally, or two on a wall and one on the ground or just one on a wall and two on the ground.
It will accept large or small ball heads and even the Wimberley head.

Disadvantages.
It's a bit heavy.

I hope this helps. But if Manfrotto has kept the same product code 055 but changed actual specifications of the tripod, this probably is of no use to you at all.

I have the 190 Pro and Up until recently I have been very happy with it. I still am, but I could to with a bit more height - I'd really like a pod that allows me to have the camera well supported at eye level.

THat is the only letdown I've had with the 190. It is very well made, sturdy, and supports all my lenses well up & including the 120-300 F2.8 (I use the 488 RC2). I am oping to keep the 190 when I get the 055 because it is lighter so better for a longr walk!

If in doubt, I shut up...

Gear: 40D, 12-24mm AT-X Pro, 17-85mm, Sigma 150mm Macro Sigma 100-300 F4, 550EX, other stuff that probably helps me on my way.

I guess a possibility would be to get the 190 now and then a 055 a bit later. I'm afraid that when packing for vacation and such, if the tripod is too heavy, I won't be able to take it at all. And a shorter tripod is worth more than none at all. Then again, I'm 1,83m (6'0) tall, and I guess it would be nice to be able to have the camera at eye-level, and still well stable.

I am now waiting for the 055ProB to arrive. Sometime next Monday or Tuesday.
Now I need to pull the trigger for the 488RC2.
Will this ballhead hold a 350D with either the sigma 17-70 or Tamron 17-50 with a430ex flash sitting vertically, eitehr way for portrait shots?
Thanks
Pat
