This is my first picture post to POTN. I have been crusing the forums for the last couple of weeks and enjoy the interaction I see here.

20 or so years ago I had a Pentax SLR and then a Minolta Maxxum 7000i and enjoyed taking all types of photographs. I just recently got a Rebel XTi with the 18-55mm lens kit because the Sony Mavica MVCD500 might be on its last leg and I really want to get back taking more creative photographs.

I took this picture with the Sony Mavica of the lighthouse on Tybee Island GA from my honeymoon back in 2003. I didn't see the halo when I shot the picture, in fact it was about a week before I noticed it.
PS I've got some other photos that I'll be posting to areas over the next few days as I can find them.

C&C please. TIA for all advice. Happy New Year!

PONT is a great place. I would crop the photo to remove the power lines. It also seems as if the lighthouse is not level, Both things can easily be fixed in most editing programs.
Welcome back to the world of creative photography.

Welcome! In #1 clone out the power lines. IMO the B/W conversion is not a very good one. Seems like you have done a straight grey-scale conversion. Try channel mixing some time. It will give better results and you will have much more control over the result.

Thanks for all the comments. When I shot the photo I knew that the lines were a distraction. I wanted to chop down the power poles! Anyway, I'm so new to getting back into photography, I've got to find an affordable software package (hopefully some freeware) to do PP with.
