Ok, so here is a dumb question, where do you go to see how many clicks you have? I have the XTi. Also as a side note, when the shutter does die can it be fixed/replaced, or do you have to just buy a new camera?

you cant see how many you've done unless you've been really careful with your cf cards and not used them in another camera... Most people here are averaging, guessing - or like me are really sad and have never deleted a picture so did a right click - properties ;)

1D owners are the only ones who have the luxury of knowing how many clicks they've done.

And yes, the shutter can be replaced. It's not so expensive but most people use it as a good point to upgrade.

And why not... :-p

Bought mine in June 05 - Currently on 15K or so - but 5D, bought in October has done 2.8K - and so the 350D has slowed down a fair bit as it is used really only for backup and macro - and my youngest enjoys using it!

How do you tell exactly how many shots you have taken?

photo_3456.jpg
therefore uve taken 3456 photos
unless uve reached 9999 then it resets itself

oh this only works if u have it on continous numbering mode

Man, I am old school compare to some of you. I had my XT for 6 months before giving it to my son for xmas. In 6 months I had about 2400 pics. I replaced the XT with a XTi and in 2 week I have just passed 100 pics.

Just over a month (purchased on Black Friday) and 2,196 Clicks. Most of the shots are throw aways, but I'm still learning. I can't even imagine how much it would cost to develop that many shots if I was using film.

exactly! This is the thing that's so easy to forget about digital, we're all raving on about thousands of shots and "oh my god how long will my shutter last." I wonder how many of us were worrying about shutter life when using film!

Well, if you could afford to process 50,000 pics using film, I don't think the cost of a camera body is going to stop you. ;) This was expecially true a few years back when the cost per pic was around 50 cents. Thats a whopping $25000 worth of images.

Not quite so..

You have to look at both the image number and the folder number.
The image number should be IMG_xxxx (or _MG_xxxx), and the folder number CANONxxx.

- If the folder number is under 200, then the image number is the number of shots taken, i.e. IMG_3456, would mean that the camera has taken 3456 shots.
- If the folder number is over 200, add 10000 for each 100.
So if the folder number is in the 300's, and the file name is IMG_3456, then it will be 2x10000 + 3456, or 23456 Images.

This holds true unless:
- The counter has been manually reset.
- A CF card from a Canon camera that has taken a greater number of shots has been used.
In that case the camera will default to whichever number is higher, the one on the CF card, or the one on the camera.
- The counter was not set to incremental.

This calculation is good for Rebel XT and 20D, as they make new folder for every 99 shots.
Newer/higher models, 30D and up, create new folder every 999 shots – so adjust the math accordingly..

What we see depends mainly on what we look for.
