I was doing some time-exposure photography tonight of the Milwaukee Art Museum (freakin' cold and windy!). Then I decided to play with PS and had to do a lot of work with the dark background to get it solid black.

Here's the end result...

Thanks - I'll have to think about what I did in PP because I didn't write anything down!

Care to share the PP?

Here's what I probably did - I had to try it again.

Duplicate Layer
Image Size: 1024x683
Exposure: -27 (YMMV depending on the original exposure)
Contrast: +10
Hue: +10

Color Balance:

  • Tone Balance: Shadows
  • Cyan-Red: +100
  • Magenta-Blue: 0
  • Yellow-Blue: -35
Clone Stamp Tool (for the black background):
  • Mode: Normal
  • Opacity: 100%
  • Flow: 100%
  • Brush: varies depending on area to be adjusted
  • Use the tool to blacken the background (after I did the Color Balance, there was a lot of "red noise" even though the ISO was 100)
Smart Sharpen:
  • Amount: 75%
  • Radius: 0.4 pixels
Try that and see how it works.

Thanks - no I don't have any shots with the wings open. That was the first time I shot the museum. Maybe during the warmer weather in summer the wings are kept open at night. It was really cold and windy last night. After driving by the building today and seeing the wings "open", the night shot would've been better if they were open.
