In this month's edition of photoshop user, the magazine put out by NAPP, Scott Kelby used his column to briefly give his views on the subject. His comments answered many of the questions I've seen people ask, so I asked and received permission to post it on this forum. If you're interested in reading it, you can find it at:

P.S. - Please do not publish this link elsewhere without written permission from photoshop user magazine.

That article sounds about right. For about 90% of my photos I can do all the processing they need in lightroom, export to a TIFF or JPEG file and then print using Qimage. This can be a time effective process.

If they image needs any manipulation, say dust removal, I use Photoshop for that purpose only.

With the addition of some minor touch-up tools, which I've heard will be in the final release, LR should be able to handle the majority of my image processing.

Also see Lightroom as my prime work flow application. Will pre-order at the earliest possible data and then mostly like wait unit late fall before deciding if an upgrade to CS-3 warrented based on what and how the new feature work.

Good article.

But...

P.S. - Please do not publish this link elsewhere without written permission from photoshop user magazine.

If he wanted it to be a secret, then he shouldn't put it on the web. URLs themselves are not property.

If he wanted it to be a secret, he wouldn't have published it in the first place so that's not the issue. :D I made the request because the URL is where I put the article, not Scott, and I had his permission to publish it. All I was asking was that if someone else wanted to publish it somewhere, they have the same courtesy to ask permission.

It is always polite to ask!!!

I have been playing with the Lightroom Public Beta for a few months now and have found the raw editing tools to be very much better than Camera Raw (ACR). There is also a useful slide show feature.

It is very useful easy to review images and sort the good from the bad quickly, far better than bridge IMHO.

My only criticisium is that the libary function is not powerful enough. I asked Adobe Labs about this, not expecting to get a reply, and received several replies with good advice. However Adobe make no apologies for the poor DAM functionality in the library, they state it was not created for this purpose, but primarily to improve work flow from camera to modified image - which it does accomplish well.

Not only polite, but required by this forum (and most others I'll bet) before you can post copywrighted material.

Quite true, which is the reason you'll see many of the posters on Adobe's forum wanting them to deep-six the DAM part or at least provide a way to avoid it. It will be a long time before they can compete with a product like iView or Extensis.

I'm sure somebody mentioned this before - but I can no longer find it - anybody recall what Lightroom's price will be?

That hasn't been made public yet, AFAIK. There have been a number of posts where someone has mentioned a price but, when questioned on where they got it, they back off.

It sounds like a good product... faster, a bit more efficient, possibly better throughput, especially if you're doing wedding functions. But if I've already invested in one of the CSxx products that has many of the same features, how much more do I want to spend to get ANOTHER product? That will depend, since what I currently have does work, although admittedly not as good. - Stu

I gotcha, I'll send my friend a link to this thread, then.
