I bought a DynaTran AT 828 from Amvona.com, I am very pleased with this tripod so far, very vesitle and easy to setup and use. I then received a pan head Quantum ray for Christmas. Also seems like a decent tripod. One thing that i really like about the Quantumray is that you can tilt the camera on its side while it is attached to the tripod. Am I missing something with the dynatran ballhead or cant this be done with this head?

You should be able to 'rotate' camera in any position in upper 180 degrees hemisphere pressing the grip. When you loose it, it supose to stay in that position. Just be carefull not to put more weight to the ball head than it can hold.

Yes I can rotated the camera I just cant flip it up on its side with the base still attached. Maybe Im not being clear, If you were using a printer what the camera does is shoot in landscape, when I want to turn it to shoot a portrait photo. So if someone was standing in front of me with the tripod I would only be able to shoot them from the waist up. I cant turn the camera to get from the feet up

If you have the same Dynatran that I do with the pistol grip ball head, there's a slot (for lack of a better word) that you have to find that will allow you to secure the ball head in place once it's in portrait mode. Play with it for a while and you'll see what I mean.

If you can do this, then you should be able to rotate camera up and down when grip in horizontal position/camera in vertical. If not, that is very strange grip.

Exactly what liza said.
I have not seen a ballhead that doesn't allow camera to rotate and shoot in portrait orientation. Well, i haven't checked all the ballheads in the world.:o

I have that tripod and pistol-grip head. Like it was said before, there is a slot to tilt the grip for a "portrait" camera view. You just have to find it.

I too have that same tripod. No instructions so my friend and I practiced with it while someone held on to the camera. I used it for a landscape shot. Only complaint is that when I use the two bubbles on the head to make sure everything is level, one bubble is level but the other one is off. the pistol grip handle is weird and the ball doesn't have a real fluid motion. That would be my only complaint. For the money, it held my 30D w/ battery grip an 24070 lens. I got the tripod to take to the desert since it would be rolling around in the back of a Jeep and getting sand in it. I couldn't see doing that with a bogen I just paid a few hundred bucks for.
