I have Manfrotto BO055MF3 legs & recently got the 322RC2 head pictured above by Mitch. I love this thing. I don't know if it's been mentioned but the quick release can also be mounted on the end of the grip as well as several other different ways. I think this was an extremely well designed & built head. I was also surprised to see that it sells for only around $100.

and I suspect totally useless for you, as if I am correct, you are into astrophoto...and will need a remote that is not in contact with the tripod

Nope, I shoot birds and being able to pull the trigger from the handle would be a godsend, since my right hand needs to be twisting the focus knobs on the scope. ;)

Well, until someone develops AF for the Orion. :D

There are three differences which make the 486RC2 better on a monopod - the 486RC2 has less weight, is a smaller physical size, and there is no need for the pan lock feature on a monopod.

However, on a tripod, all of the advantages of the 488RC2 are beneficial. Those are the separate pan lock and the bigger ball that has the ability to hold heavier camera/lens rigs steady without creep.

I chose the 488RC0 for my monopod as well, due to the fact that the bigger 1D series with a L series tele-zoom routinely goes over 7 pounds. Too much weight for the mini-balls to keep stable. I think anything over 4 pounds is a lot to ask of the mini ball heads. JMO.

Then it's something you will really enjoy! it's perfectly placed, just check out where the thread hole is to see if it falls where you need it to.

assuming you have the same model as I do, it's called the 322RC2 , the RC stands for remote control, while there is no mention of it on the manfrotto website, I am sure that your local proshop can assist you with the ordering, it's in the paper catalog but for some reason, not on the website.... which is the worst website I ever saw.

Whe you order, you have to specify which model camera you have.

Actually RC doesn't mean "Remote Control". Maybe "Release Clamp" - it's on all the quick-release-equipped heads.

oops, that never even occured to me! my apologies.....however in this case, the RC can also mean remote control!!!

I am heading to the studio this morning and I have the Manfrotto/avenger catalogues so I will post the actual model number for the remote, I know which model I have but since we don't have the same camera body, they may not be compatible.

Yes, and there are two models, one for the EOS1 line ( USFw46 ) and one for the 20/30/300 D's (522SCA), obviously, it's worth to check on this before ordering.

Nope - the D30, D60, 10D, 20D, 30D and 5D take the same cable as the 1D series. It's only the Digital Rebels that take the sub-mini phone plug. And the cable's a separate item (at least at B&H).

Really? judging by the list in the catalogue, there have seperate models for a bunch of canon models...but I would trust the reseller rather than my catalogue as it dates from 2005
