I have a 70-200 f/2.8L IS, pretty expensive and flashy. I do some weddings and events where I want to get great candids and try to stay out of the eyes of the guests. But the 70-200 makes this alittle difficult being that it's soo big and white! I've actually had people come up to me

"wow a white lens!?!! that must have costed a pretty penny!"

"wow it looks like you have a telescope on your camera!"

I was thinking about putting on Black Painters tape because when removed it doesn't leave any residue. But I went to the store today and all I could find is blue. I saw some cheap foam stuff that costs like $70 or something crazy but that stuff doesn't even cover all the white. I was thinking about maybe going to a seamstress or someone that can sew and have them measure the lens and cut stretchable cloth so that it can go over the lens??? Anyone else have any ideas?

You could get a LensCoat to cover your lens with matt black or camouflage neoprene.

thanks, yeah that's the $70 foam stuff I was talking about, I don't like how it looks like it is on the lens and there is still a whole lot of white showing.

Use Gaffer's tape. Should be available at your local camera store, or other such stores. It's black, and leaves no residue unless left on for extended periods of time in the sun. For short stints where it won't bake, it will come off without residue. It's also very smooth and will feel pretty good. It's not cheap, but you should be able to get a good sized roll for about $20.

I shoot weddings for a living and my 70-200 2.8 IS, as big as it is, has never been a problem... and my style is mor PJ than formal..

Outdoors my 70-200 is great for candids, but I found indoors, I've had great results with the 24-70 as I can get closer without people getting in the way... and I use FF..

I get what you're saying, though.. I guess I kinda like the attention!!

I rarely have problems with people getting distracted by the lens, especially at events that more important things are going on.

i second that vote for gaffers tape. a friend of mine introduced it to me as a way to cover the logos on gear to make it a little less flashy, because our gear looks expensive enough without it reading "CANON." i would definately look into gaffers tape, I know BHphoto has it.

you have the right attitude and personality for that fast, up close shooting. it's hard to be confident and relaxed if you're plexed up about the color of your lens :D .

There is some tape I have used to seal water pipes before, its rubbery 'stretchy' and has no stickyness but sticks to itself, I cant remember the name of it but I'm sure a plumber or hardware shop would know what it is.

People don't worry about the lens color that a photographer uses. Not sure why you are worrying about it. Take the pictures and forget what your gear looks like.
