Hi everyone! Is there anyway to have a battery meter application installed on a SD800? I'd think that it wouldn't be that hard to do since we can connect the camera to a computer... I love this camera, but it's always dying on me because I can't predict when to charge it...

Help :(

When you return home after using the camera immeditly put the battery in the charger and place your car keys beside it. That way you don't forget to put it back in the camera before you leave the house.

There is no way to install applications into cameras. You can only hope that one day Canon will release a firmware version which will have a battery indicator.

Best wishes,
Oleg.

Since it's firmware, isn't there something that can be done?

Note: I do not condone hacking firmwares or using any unofficial versions of firmwares.

A battery indicator would be nice though.

The only thing that can be done is hacking (like it was in case of Canon EOS 300D about three years ago). I doubt that Canon removed the battery indicator hardware circuity from the camera.

Best wishes,
Oleg.

I don't know anything about hacking, so don't get this wrong but is it possible or not? If, as you say, the hardware supports it and the camera can be connected to a computer...

And I'm new to the forum, is there any history of Canon representatives being aware of what is discussed here and taking measures?

There are many great features that I love on my S2 and SD600, but I too wish there was a better battery level indicator. But since there isn't, I can't imagine trying to modify it. So I just keep plenty of hot batteries on hand, and keep on a shootin'!

I said that I believe that the hardware capability is there, but the only way to know for sure is to read about this in Canon technical papers - I doubt that anyone from the outside can do that.

Regarding Canon representative - I haven't seen anyone like this in this forum. I know that Chuck Westfall (Canon Director of Media and Customer Relationship) frequents the DPreview forums, though.
