Every shot except the wide and under-basket ones are on the 30D 85mm f/2.0 1/400th ISO3200 with the 85mm f/1.8. The others are with the 24-70 f/2.8L on the 10D at 1/200th f/2.8 and ISO3200. The only one cropped was the last because my horizon was terrible.. Others are as-framed.

Not too bad for action, but these are always tricky with arms in front of the face, etc. We all know how horrible the lighting is, but would suggest continue working on exposure and WB.

I like the third one the best. It really takes a ball and a face to make most sports shots. jump shots without a face are less interesting to folks looking at them. beware of distracting parts of your images. example in #1, the arm pretty much makes it a discard most of the time. there again, my jugdement is from reporting (shooting) sports for newspapers, your mileage may vary.

WB I was lazy since I just got home from the game right before posting. Didn't even touch it yet - it's really not that far off TBH. Most of these girls are as pale as it gets. Exposures though are spot on via handheld light meter. I do agree about the arms. They get/got me almost the entire time but I have some less-peak action shots that have faces.

I'd normally trash the first too because of the ref's arm...but I like her drive on that shot. It's not even 100% sharp anyway.

Thanks for commenting, both.

bball is harder than some think to shoot. Lots of movement, tough angles, etc. I think that 85 prime is a great lens for the job. I also use my 70-200 just in case when I need to get close in at half court. These shots are pretty good, a tad soft, but good.

There wasn't nearly enough light for my 70-200. I could get 1/200th with it and that's it. I only used the 24-70 for a select few shots because it just wasn't fast enough. The noise is probably what's making them look soft. I also went light on the sharpening because of so much of it. I'm batching them through NeatImage to see if sharpening after cleaning helps.

I wish I had a wide prime. I'm putting that 28mm f/1.8 back on the wishlist...might have to settle for it until I can swing the 35L.

These next few aren't nearly as exciting but they've been cleaned up and sharpened a little more aggressively. Not sure if that worked or not. I adjusted the WB but I think I flubbed it. Don't really care though to be honest.

I think great first attempt. Although a shame about the arm, I like the first one best too. Amazing how much sharper/brighter they look once you had a chance to process. I am impressed at how good you filled the frame with the players. Need to gets me that 85! Look forward to seeing more of your hoop shots.

Thanks Linda. Overall I'm happy with these. They're a lot better than my first attempts at other indoor sports. I know I'll improve the more I shoot.

Here's one just for the sake of it:

Shoot! I changed my mind...that last one is my favorite! That would make a great poster! Although the left lower corner and ceiling seems to detract the eye somewhat. Not nitpicking cuz I love it... if you could blur that window out some...:)

I'd take out #1, 2, 3, 4
Then crop tighter on the last two in post #8.

In the future, just use incandescent wb. I'm betting the Kelvin level is around 3500k.
Overall, good job for first time.
