if im going to an event and want to pack light my 20D and 24-105 do the trick great.
most of the time for birding i just throw my 400 5.6 on my 20D, hop in the car and go.

It's really been great watching as people chime in on this one. This is exactly the reason why there is no one or right answer to the question "what lens should I get?". Everybody has their own taste and style and this is a perfect example of that.

yes alot of styles and lens, (and weight lol ) !! we all must have massive forearms by now.

i am wondering and this applies to the single body owners :

-how often do you change lens ?
-how often do you find the need to clean the body ?
-do you change lenses in the field, street during shooting ?
((as opposed to changing in clean environment prior to shooting))

I voted for a set a mixed primes and zooms - but it's a little bit more complicated than that. I take a mix of lenses based on what I think I'm going to be shooting. That is if I'm going to shoot wildlife I'll take a different set of lenses than if I'm going to shoot nature/macro shots. I also shoot fairs and festivals, so in that case I'll take a camera with a portrait lens attached as well as a body with a mid-range zoom. I'll take along a telephoto lens as well to allow me to cover any stages. I treat lenses as a set of tools, and choose the ones appropriate to the job I'm doing.

On normal workdays it depends from season: 35L in dark winter days, 100/2.8 in fall and spring and 70-200/4L (occasionally with 1.4x) in summer when I have enough light.
After doing photo-a-day project for a year and photo a week for little while longer, I think that interesting landscapes around home have already been covered.

Regarding vacations, weekend trips, etc. In cities 17-40/4L + 100/2.8.
For other new places (nature, etc.) 17-40/4L + 70-200/4L (and in some cases add 1.4x and/or 100/2.8 macro into bag).

My current, most common photographic situation is travelling on business, mostly to Europe. If I will have free time, I carry my 5D with the 24-105L.
Most radical travel kit I ever carried was my Pentax 645, 2 zooms and 2 primes. Large, heavy backpack. And a bunch of 220 film (remember that?)

Film: Leica M-4, Elan 7E, Rolleiflex 2.8f, Pentax 645 -- Digital: Canon Pro-1, EOS 5D Mk III
EOS Lenses: Sigma 24-70 f2.8 EX - Canon EF 17-40 f4.0L - Canon EF 24-105 f4.0L - Canon EF 35 f1.4L USM - Canon EF100-400 f4.5-5.6L IS USM - Canon EF100 f2.8 Macro - Other stuff: MR 14EX - 430EX - 580EXII - ST-E2 - TC1.4x - TC-80N3

24-105L on the 5D and the 135L on the 20D, because I just got the 135. Otherwise the 70-200 2.8, although that double combo is a ton of weight. It's more like carry around than walk around.

I'm in the 'other' category, as I shoot super-wide (15mm fisheye) to mid-tele (85mm)
