I'm sure this has been asked before but I can't find any specific answers using the search function.

I'm looking for a sturdy tripod suitable for a 400 f/2.8 hung on a Wimberley. The use will be primarily wildlife from a hide, so weight is not quite so important as had I been planning to treck all day over the moors. Having said this, some sites could be serveral miles from the nearest vehicle access so I don't want to haul an additional 20 lb if I can avoid it.

Price is a material consideration and I'd like it to be below £250 ($400) so the top carbonfibre Gitzo and similar models are probably outside of my budget.

I suspect that I won't need/want and adjustable height centre column.

All help most appreciated.

Canon 1Ds MkII, 16-35 f/2.8L, 24-70 f/2.8L, 70-200 f/2.8L, 135 f/2L, 100-400L IS, 24mm f/2.8, 50mm f/1.4, 100mm Macro, x1.4 Extender, Gitzo GT3540LS, Wimberley. Elinchrom system.

Opinion should have a foundation based on factual evidence, logical reasoning and experience.

Manfrotto 475 or an aluminium Gitzo?

Look at Dynatran or Benro as good alternatives to CF Gitzo's. I see that B&H now sells Benro.

The Gitzo 1327 seems to be the legs of choice around most heavy lens users.

I'm looking for one too. How do you feel about a used Gitzo?
